He had a bad team beside him. When I was in Carlisle he scored a goal that got us out of a scrap. Scored against Swindon (away) which gave us the win. And against MK Dons. Given the new players that we are getting, and the fact that they can put a ball into the box better, I reckon he'd start scoring more often. I'd for one, will be annoyed if he leaves, especially for another League One team, given that he can score at this level.
this is bad! Despite all the criticism Benno got, he was an intelligent footballer, and an intelligent man. As someone else has already highlighted, he got us out of a few problems last season! He definitely should have been given another chance in a much more talented squad
Seems ridiculous, he was out injured, and then suspended twice (i think)... got vital goals and this term we have a better squad around him. Why would you want him gone... ?
Because we drop a couple of leagues, must our standards drop accordingly? To some extent, yes. But to believe a player of limited ability is so important to our chances of promotion is bizarre, in my opinion. Paul Benson is an average player of average worth. If we are to move onwards and upwards, he cannot be a part of the first team plans, in my opinion (again). I cannot be the only person who saw all of the rubbish that Benson served up last season, surely? As for his red cards...
He is or will be a 'bit player', a part of the many pieces, not integral but we need a squad and not just a couple of standouts. If he comes on for 30 minute camoe's and puts the odd header away or taps in some green crosses he will have done his job. Like you say opinions etc, but i see benson doing better this season, with more delivery into him and better link up play and passing he will be given many more chances. Last year it wasnt him or the attack we were let down by, it was defense and soft soft lapses.
A squad player for sure. But not our poacher extraordinaire. Good players are still good players in rubbish teams - you can see that they are top class, like Darren Bent in our relegation year. For me, Benson was dross in a dross team. The same as Racon, Semedo and many others leaving with their heads hanging in shame. But this year will be different.
I honestly couldn't give a toss if he stays or goes. I don't like him, I don't hate him. I nothing him.
Personally I would like him to stay, he looks capable of scoring goals at this level particularly with some decent service - and he's a different player to our other 2 senior strikers. But I think 2 is the optimal point if he was to leave we really would only have 2 senior strikers at the club with only a couple of weeks till the season starts and that is my main concern!
I don't get this, I don't get this at all - he was living off scraps last season - this season, we've got a greatly improved midfield hopefully leading to a greatly improved level of service to the front players and he's off? Furthermore, £150k is ridiculous. Absolute peanuts. Could be the first significant mistake of the new regime IMO.
Cheers, Mike. There's another thing I'm worried about here - obnoxious little t**t though he might be, there's no doubt that Lee Hughes is one of the most effective front men in this division but it was clear last season that he was cutting a pretty lone furrow and was badly missing a complementary strike partner - Benson could be that partner, and that could spell trouble for a lot of sides this season.
yep I think this one is gonna come back and bite us on the backside especially with Notts County away so early in the season too I have no doubt Benson will get on the scoresheet if he plays against us that day. I just hope CP has a player or 2 lined up to come in but i'd also be happy if one of those was Euell as for me Euell would get in the team before Benson anyway
Unless he's firmly told his chances will be limited then I can't see him upping sticks up north to be honest...
No disrespect, and I have said this so many times, but BENSON IS NOT VERY GOOD! Now he is going to form a deadly partnership with Lee Hughes and come back to bite us on the bum. WHY?!? If Paul Benson finishes in the top 5 goalscorers goals this season in League One I will personally contact him and ask what charity he would like me to donate £25 to.
I heard that Benno wanted a starting berth every match, so I can understand that if he wasn't in the starting 11 that he would look to other options. £150k, probably not worth much more. Its a shame if he goes, because I think he would have linked up well with Greeny.
I'm with Tewkes and Mikey... think he's seriously underrated on here and we shouldn't let him go for £150k... he'll score goals wherever he goes if he gets decent service. Of course, if they've got a good replacement... but Williams isn't it from what I've seen (admittedly not a lot)
Bit too tired to read all posts- so here is my thoughts: I'd rather benno stayed- decent goal ratio in a poor side, so think he deserves more of a chance in a midfield containing some creativity. I also think selling benson almost a week before the season is a bit silly considering all the bonding that's gone on. They had better have someone lined up rather than panic buying. Now to contradict myself- if the bid is a reported 150k then I can see the boards thought process- taking in to account his age and seemingly poor raport with a section of the fans.
