The technical rules for the 2014 season have been revealed today by the FIA

    The rules include :

1.The new 1.6-litre V6 engines which will be introduced, will be limited to 15,000rpm, down from 18,000rpm

    2. The cars will have to run “in electric mode” with “no ignition and no fuel supply to the engine at all times when being driven in the pit lane.”

3.The KERS system will be doubled in power to 120kW

Self starting motors: This rule will require each driver to be able to turn on their car “when seated normally at the wheel and without any external assistance.

Smaller front wings: The size of front wings will be reduced from 1,800mm to 1,650mm in an attempt to clean up the look of modern F1 cars, and also the amount of aero pieces.

Minimum weight increases: The minimum weight of F1 cars will once again increase this time from 640kg to 660kg.

Extra Gear: An interesting move is that the number of forward gears will be increased to eight. The FIA will give an allowance in 2014 when teams nominate which gear ratios they will use: “For 2014 only, a competitor may re-nominate these ratios once within the Championship season, in which case the original nomination becomes immediately void.

For the full set of rules

What are peoples thoughts on the effects these rules will have Positive / Negative ?.

Same gear ratio's for whole season seems a little odd. Why make the ratio's a comprimise rather than optimal. Yes it may save a little cost, but it'll effectively waste engine performance.

V6 turbo's at 16k rpm is good with me <ok>
KERS in pits will keep the casual hippy happy
More KERS power is not enough in my mind. Let them develop it for gods sake!
    Starter motors, makes sense
Front wing, I actually like these wide ones
    Weight, meh

    It's 15,000rpm not 16,000rpm

5.1.3 Crankshaft rotational speed must not exceed 15000rpm.

I can see a loophole there, call your crankshaft Dave or something, then you can have Dave going at 20k revs.

15k is a lot better than the original 10 and 12k that was floated round

Self starting motors <ok> so if they stall they wont be standing around waiting for their team to stick the ignition rod at the back. (giggidy)

I also agree with the electric mode in pit lanes <ok>

They currently pick a selection of 30 gears for the season (I expect this to go up in 2014), of which they pick seven for each weekend, so they are optimised to an extent for each circuit, it's just to stop the top teams making 140 ratios because the smaller teams don't have the resources to do this.

Same. Everyone I've spoken to about this also seems to think the low, wide wings look better, it's only 5 Live who seem to disagree. The older front wings were hideous, still prefer the rear wings though:

hmm KERS in the pitlane, I wonder how many times the pitlane is going to be blocked by a faulty/poorly charged KERS.

Ahhh, I read it as a ratio for the whole season, as in same final drive for all circuits.

How does F1 seriously want to cut costs, when the rules are changed every other year forcing the teams to spend bucket loads redesigning/ developing new equipment?

The main way to cut costs may be to change the rules every 3 months (copyright: FIA)

electric mode in pit lane? huh?
    how? - using KERS? WHY!!!!!

So when there is a KERS problem - you cannot get into the pits! very smart idea.

I really hope F1 does not lose the noise factor, especially at the start because that could be ridiculous.

    Fast milk-floats here we come.
I can see several mechanics and pit-lane types getting hit by silent F1 cars coming in.
