Tell you what I think about their first goal: If Maya hadn't given it away to Sterling, odds were a pound to a penny that we'd have stupidly gifted them a goal in some other manner. We were playing atrociously and it was a matter of time.

That said, from 2-0 down it was an excellent game - 90 minutes of that and I'd have been happy whatever the result.

I agree. I really hope Ron dropped Cedric on the basis of the upcoming game(s) and for no other reason. He has got 4 stitches in the cut he received from Bojan, so, maybe that was the reason.
We lost. Game over. Move on - I'm away for the next 2 games, so I'd expect us to play magnificently

On the first goal..literally whole defence is to blame in my opinion and I can't hammer Yoshida 100% for it. It's picky but Fonte shouldn't pass to Yoshida in the first place on the opening goal. He can see Yoshida has nothing on at all. Fonte should arguably just boot the ball long. But in fairness to Fonte he makes a decent pass to Yoshida. When Fonte doesn't boot it long (and passes to Yoshida) Yoshida should boot the ball long, he is caught like a deer in the headlights when he receives the ball. It is great play from Sterling to steal the ball and play De Bruyne in. The blame for losing possession goes to Yoshida for not booting the ball long of course, but Fonte isn't achieving anything from giving Yoshida the ball under pressure other than boosting his passing stats. I think it's a strange pass from Fonte. And Yoshida has to blast the ball away.

The next bit is probably more important and arguably the real reason we concede the goal. Yoshida dwells on the ball naively and loses it. But I encourage people to look at the replay. Yoshida busts a gut to get back, but can't quite recover. The real danger to us is obviously Sterling, Aguero and De Bruyne. With Yoshida trying to get back, Fonte tries to deal with Sterling and Aguero at the same time. The only option in the end for Fonte is to back Stekelenburg if Sterling shoots. It's not an easy angle to beat him from.

As soon as Sterling gets the ball it's clear that Bertrand isn't in a position to deal with De Bruyne. As the left centre back Van Dijk simply has to deal with De Bruyne, but gets drawn completely to Aguero. For some reason he thinks Bertrand can cover De Bruyne. I say for some reason, but I can certainly understand it. He only has a split second to think about it, and perhaps doesn't even look and assumes Bertrand can get back. That's not to say I think not looking it acceptable. He has enough time to look and assess it when Sterling first picks up the ball.

I really don't know what Bertrand has pushed up for so high when the ball is on the other side of the pitch. He shouldn't be putting himself in a position where if Yoshida loses it then he's out the game completely. That being said you never want to be gifting a tap in and I think it's poor from Van Dijk personally.

It is my personal gut feeling that Yoshida would have dealt with De Bruyne there if he was playing left centre back and that he would have assessed that Bertrand couldn't get back. Van Dijk doesn't smell the real danger well enough here. No matter what happens he can't afford to leave a player with a tap in like that. The whole defence can bear some of the blame really. Fonte the least of the blame. I think it's real harsh to pin that one purely on Yoshida. I think that goal was just one of those things I'm afraid. All four defenders could have potentially stopped that goal happening if they made different decisions.

Now. Despite me passing some of the blame to all the defenders on the opener, despite it being technically a Yoshida error, I have to say that Yoshida has lost the plot on the third goal entirely. He simply has to go with Kolarov. There was no reason for him to tuck right in to centre back and leave Kolarov in acres and acres of space. Not only did he tuck too much and not trust the team to deal with Sterling, everyone else held a good line to play Sterling offside when De Bruyne crossed the ball to Kolarov. Yoshida got drawn to Sterling and was far too deep. He should have held a good line with the rest of the defence and dealt with the player wide open in our right back position (Kolarov). To be honest I have no idea what he was thinking leaving Kolarov free, that was really poor from Yoshida. A much, much, bigger mistake than the opening goal.

The bottom line is that Cedric must always play right back when he is available. Yoshida is not good enough to play right back, particularly against good sides. He's like a deer in the headlights against top teams at right back.

Hopefully this reads ok, I didn't realise how much I wrote until I hit post.

Yoshida ****ed up. That sort of error is embarrassing at Sunday league level. Oh well onto Liverpool. I just hope RK now realises that Yosh doesn't give us that extra boost defensively that Cedric doesn't.

We'll see. It's took him an eternity to realise Tadic is much better on the left, he still doesn't seem 100% sure on that one either.

Cedric is better going forward and defensively at right back than Yoshida. Not surprising, he's Portugal's first choice right back. Yoshida is a good centre back. An ok emergency back up for right and left back. Koeman's thinking is strange to me. Not having Cedric in the squad at all is even stranger, Koeman couldn't at least try to redeem his mistake at half time. This is really ultimate proof his preference of Yoshida over Cedric is nothing to do with their abilities in the air, which I've pointed out before. He genuinely seems to think Yoshida is a better option there, which amazes me.

If we play a back four with Yoshida at right back against a team like Manchester City I want Davis in front of him at right midfield helping him out. I want Wanyama at right DM eager to help Yoshida when he can. Alternatively I want us playing a back three/five instead. It's strange to play Mane at right midfield and not give orders to a DM to help Yoshida out more ( the player position map suggests he wasn't helped out enough). But then, Koeman isn't thinking that the side is weakened by Yoshida being there and so isn't looking to protect him as such. His thinking is that he's a better option than Cedric, so his mindset is different in setting the side up.

Personally I'm playing Davis at right mid against a side like City even with Cedric at right back. It gives a chance for Cedric to get forward occasionally and have protection.

I was trying to think who was the player that got all the flak before Yoshida got the dubious honour. Remembered on the way back from the paper shop. Had to go through the alphabet twice to get letter G.

I was also disappointed tadic didn't start. With Pelle out we suddenly lost two thirds of our normal attack by benching tadic.

Everyone seemed to be preoccupied with a expected man City onslaught where as city were probably hoping we would go defensive to allow the onslaught to happen - a self forfilling prophecy.

Had we have attacked them and got at their relatively poor central defence we might have played on their current nerves, instead in my humble opinion we gifted them the win

Cedrics absence from the squad is a mystery, possible reasons, that blow on the head last week, four stitches included may have meant he was considered at risk, he may have been unwell, or there may be some internal reason for it, disciplinary or just RonKo didn't fancy him to perform this week-end. We probably will never know.

The third goal was a no win situation for Yoshida.
All the defence were drawn towards de Bruyne, leaving Sterling unmarked on the edge of the 6 yard box, in front of goal.
Had Yoshida stayed wide, and de Bruyne passed to Sterling, Yoshida would have been slaughtered for not covering.
As it was, de Bruyne, being an intelligent and very good footballer, picked out the only unmarked player, who was in a wider position, than Sterling.
This was another collective error, by ALL defenders allowing themselves to be drawn out of position.
For what it's worth, why is Bertrand not getting any blame for a poor effort to clear the ball off the line? His foot seemed to be stuck to the ground and he just leaned his leg forward. It wasn't the hardest of shots, and there was only an extremely narrow gap, maybe 2 or 3 ball widths, between Bertrand and the post.
Not looking for a war, but really think this was another team error, rather than individual.

Regarding the second City goal, should that be, technically, a VVD OG?

As far as I can work out, Delph's shot hit the inside of VVD's right leg, diverting almost square, onto the back of VVD's left leg, before then diverting back towards the goal.
If it hadn't hit the left leg it would have missed the goal by a long way.

Strictly, untouched by WVD or Stek it would have gone into the goal [tbf, I''m assuming that as I haven't seen it beyond one look], so it should be Delph's, and no doubt will be. However, if it is Pelle or Mane scoring for Saints then it is an own goal. If Rooney shoots, and it is heading just inside the corner flag before being deflected in it's his goal. He gets extra special rules. :)

To be fair, if Rooney has a shot that is going just inside the corner flag, goal side, then he deserves the goal... shows an improvement :)

I only say extra special rules for Rooney because I've seen a shot of his, a few seasons back, where he skewed a volley and it was spinning away, on a trajectory towards the corner flag, before it hit someone's back, and they gave it to him. Not a single commentator or pundit suggested it might be an own goal. Those professionals go blind at appropriate times.
