Not done that but I have done a few long hauls.....which was Mauritius this year...12 hours on a night flight with a unhappy toddler 2 seats in front made it one long ass flight. Where where you going to fly over Greenland Tom?
Actually, so do I. My take on it is, once the door is shut, there's nothing I can do but sit back and enjoy the ride. In one period of about 4 years, I visited something like 28 countries, working in each one for between one and four weeks (depending on the distance from the UK) and often the best bit was the journey there or home. I've had a few 'experiences' on planes, but nothing I ever thought "this is it" - so I guess I'm lucky! Sailing with my parents in the 60s and 70s though ........ there were number of times when I thought we'd had it - the main reason I very rarely get on a boat (unless it's a big one) these days!!
That's just amazing!! Across the middle of Australia is another one for a window seat (though it does get a bit boring, but then you think just HOW big is this place?)!
Yep. Been back to NZ a few times and usually go the eastern route, but I have been via Los Angeles, chasing the Sun, which included passing over Iceland, Greenland, before coming south over Canada, North America. The view of Greenland was astonishing and will live with me forever.. But also watching the tundra over Canada, then the first railroads, then the beginnings of trees, then more railroads and forests, then the first settlements and roads, etc... It was a fantastic geography lesson just looking out of the window.
Not in the winter, surely? Boy does it get cold there - went to Madison in January once - took me about a week to thaw out!!
We flew to Puerto Vallarta last year and went up past Iceland and then down the entire length of the U.S, don't recall seeing anything of Greenland, but the wife has just informed me I watched a film and then had a nap..... Sounds like I missed looking out of the window Only thing for it....I need to go away again and pay more attention. Although on our honeymoon we went to Cuba and flew over the Bahamas which was quite stunning from the air.
Back in 1991 I was emigrating to NZ and flying with Singapore Airlines. At one point, several hours before coming into Singapore for a stopover, the aircraft banked to the right. It was obviously making a major turn. We had had the shutters down for a few hours [to try to get our body clocks adjusted, I imagine] even though it mid-afternoon-ish outside. With curiosity I lifted my shutter a tiny bit and a stream of light came in. Below were these tiny emerald islands with white rings around them in the bluest of blue seas. The stewardess came over to make sure I'd shut the shutter again, but I asked her what the islands were. She opened the shutter again and closed it and said it was the Maldives. I asked her if they could chuck me out with a parachute. She got the message and agreed they were very beautiful, but not today.
Yeah you should be able to. I think it's about 5, but it's a pre-record jobby, so I'm doing it at 12:30. I'll let you know.
*cough* Only Monday morning we were given the location for our global meeting in January.... In 2014 it was flying into Minneapolis for a meeting in Lacrosse. I have never been so cold in my life. ...the 2016 meeting in January (not March like last time).... back to the same venue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks gents for the timely comments above about how cold it will be in January!
TSS - on the flights, I have only had one dodgy moment. I am pretty relaxed on flights, either reading, sleeping, or more often than not, finishing of a presentation I am supposed to be delivering that day . PS. Can Pie be banned from joining in this conversation. I don't think I want to know any 'scares' he has witnessed thanks.
