A vote from FL clubs today voted in favour of reducing the number of Substitutes allowed from 7 to 5, coming into effect for the start of this season. (2011/12)

Why have they done this? What was wrong with 7 subs?

Makes the managers job even more of a challenge. Only 4 subs really, because 1 will be the 2nd goalkeeper. I expect the players will be disappointed as well, especially youngsters who might have been blooded on the bench.

Nothing, but committees have to justify their existence.

Seems like a silly decision, there were no problems with 7 as far as I was aware. Do we have a link?

Can't understand why they'd do it for financial reasons? Clubs didn't have to have to fill the 7 sub quota if they didn't want to or couldn't.

I personally think the Football League are trying to differentiate themselves from the Premier League as much as possible and this is another step in that direction.

They dont have a bench. They have one those £4.99 pop up garden chairs from Argos.

    As Portsmouth regularly showed :D

But maybe it's to give teams like Portsmouth who can't fill a bench more of a chance? Either way it seems silly and will surely damage (if only slightly) the development of youngsters.

Jobsworth idiots on high salaries thinking that they are important sticking their ores into something they no little about. The two sub places lost will no doubtedly be younger youth/academy players and they will have less of a chance for first team action. For example, if we are 3-0 up and have the option to bring on say lallana or doble, then we would be better suited to give doble the chance to get a run out as the game is (hopefully) won rather than risk a first team player. I thought the object in this country was to focus on young home grown talent..

as mentioned, this completely goes against the initiatives to get more youngsters through.

It was a request from our dear near neighbours as they can't afford anymore players.

Yeah you are spot on there mate. Getting experience now in a championship side for a youngster is going to be harder. The opposition will be better. Now add to it the new rule with 2 less subs and this will damage the prospects of the new stars coming through
