I think it was early-1960s, which would make Alan Brown our manager and Bill Shankly Liverpool's. But I'm only going on memory so don't know a lot about it.

No, that was MacColl. Brown was the one who got us relegated in his first season, left, came back and did it in his first season again!

Ah right. So i wasnt even close.

Brown was the **** one. MacColl was the good one that got **** on by the club.

One more question. Why the **** would a club re employ someone who had previously got them relegated?

Nobody outside the Board Room of the time ever figured that out. Incredible decision. Old pals act?

Nah, mate. It's people like you who make SAFC a long and interesting story rather than a p*ss-poor 90 minute fad. Anyway, didn't sleep well so thank you for the conversation. :emoticon-0148-yes:

My Dad rated Alan Brown very highly and thought we were wrong to get rid of him - I am only just 40 a few months ago so have no idea!!

I'd use the Europa League as a competition for the development squad, not a single first teamer. Where else would you get an opportunity to put your youngsters into competitive matches without fear of losing valuable points?

Absolute shambles of a competition and should be treated as such.

There were some who liked him, Marcus. But three times during 1972, there were league crowds of less than 9,000 at Roker Park. That should give you an idea of what the majority thought of him.

From where we are now I would kill for 5th place!

On Alan Brown, the fact he got us promoted after the first relegation might be why he was brought back. I think he was not sacked the first time he left, he got a better offer from Sheffield Wednesday, who were a big club back then. I think he left in the close season after promotion. Mind you that sort of loyalty tells its own story!

You're right about Brown leaving after gaining promotion in '64, Washy. But I don't think he signed for Wednesday till later that summer. I'm not so sure the two were connected. But the mystery is why we climbed three places every year under MacColl, and were catching the eye playing the Jim Baxter way ... and then they sacked him for a man who took five years to get us promoted and one year to get us relegated, guaranteed, every time! Nobody at the time could figure out that decision. I still can't <laugh> ! It was absolutely impossible to justify.
