The French had the largest standing army in Europe. The German invasion force was smaller. Outdated methods, such as the enormous resources spent on the Maginot Line when modern war had become mobile not static and which the Germans simply bypassed, and memories of WW1's attrition was what caused their defeat. The Germans lost more in WW1 than France but unfortunately that didn't stop them trying it again.
Oh aye! When me, Carmine and TOM were in we didn't even have a bloody chateau! Spoilt sods, telephones, chateaux, WTF!
Yes, Warwick, my ex and I went there in the 80's. Very sobering experience indeed. Hadn't the maquis ambushed a German (looting) column and the destruction was as reprisal? It's a national monument, with a new Oradour built next to it, instead of rebuilding it, from what I recall.
Football started again in France last night, Lille played Nice. There's a full fixture schedule this weekend, but home fans only, there's no away allocation for any game, so the police can just concentrate on looking for nutters.
I don't think our idea of what is right (not saying that the decision re this weekend are right) should be affected by what others choose to do or choose not to do.
I disagree with him. In Syria attacks are happening all the time. You'd just have a constant round of tributes which would diminish their affect. As seems to be shown, many people think that singing the French national anthem at Wembley was right but playing the same anthem this weekend is wrong.
I totally agree with you but my dad fought the Japanese in Burma and he hated the Japanese people until the day he died. Some people have such a bad experience that logic doesn't triumph over feelings.
My granddad was exactly the same, he even refused to speak to my brother in law because he got a job at the Nissan factory in Tyneside.
I think the French knew what would happen but still felt it was their duty to do what they could. There's so many things that went on in the two world wars and later that it's easy to come out with criticisms about everybody but I don't think it serves any purpose.
I know. But the ones shot were just rounded up at random. It is not criticising anyone just pointing out their deaths had nothing to do with their actions but as a result of beingnin the wrong place at thr wrong time. In some ways even worse for the unfortunate people involved.
Point of order, Lammy. It's on Wearside. Washington to be exact. You'd get lynched around here for saying that.
I thought it was general knowledge that the wealth bestowed on Sunderland by the presence of the Nissan factory was the sole reason they get larger crowds at home and more following them away from home than we do.
