Capoue apparently affected by Paris. How will that pan out? Will he play a blinder or will he be given time off?

I will admit that in some ways I will be glad that I cannot be there. Some of the TV coverage this week has moved me to tears, and I wouldn't wish to show off to the fans that I am just a softy at heart.

The words to La Marseillaise in French & English - you have till 12:45 Saturday to master them!! :)

La Marseillaise - paroles en français
    Allons enfants de la Patrie
Le jour de gloire est arrivé !
    Contre nous de la tyrannie
    L'étendard sanglant est levé
    Entendez-vous dans nos campagnes
    Mugir ces féroces soldats?
Ils viennent jusque dans vos bras.
    Égorger vos fils, vos compagnes!
    Aux armes citoyens
    Formez vos bataillons
    Marchons, marchons
    Qu'un sang impur
    Abreuve nos sillons

    Que veut cette horde d'esclaves
    De traîtres, de rois conjurés?
    Pour qui ces ignobles entraves
    Ces fers dès longtemps préparés?
Français, pour nous, ah! quel outrage
    Quels transports il doit exciter?
    C'est nous qu'on ose méditer
    De rendre à l'antique esclavage!
    Quoi ces cohortes étrangères!
Feraient la loi dans nos foyers!
    Quoi! ces phalanges mercenaires
    Terrasseraient nos fils guerriers!
Grand Dieu! par des mains enchaînées
Nos fronts sous le joug se ploieraient
    De vils despotes deviendraient
    Les maîtres des destinées.
    Tremblez, tyrans et vous perfides
    L'opprobre de tous les partis
    Tremblez! vos projets parricides
    Vont enfin recevoir leurs prix!
Tout est soldat pour vous combattre
    S'ils tombent, nos jeunes héros
La France en produit de nouveaux,
Contre vous tout prêts à se battre.
    Français, en guerriers magnanimes
    Portez ou retenez vos coups!
    Épargnez ces tristes victimes
    À regret s'armant contre nous
    Mais ces despotes sanguinaires
    Mais ces complices de Bouillé
Tous ces tigres qui, sans pitié
Déchirent le sein de leur mère!
    Nous entrerons dans la carrière
Quand nos aînés n'y seront plus
    Nous y trouverons leur poussière
Et la trace de leurs vertus
Bien moins jaloux de leur survivre
    Que de partager leur cercueil
    Nous aurons le sublime orgueil
De les venger ou de les suivre!
    Amour sacré de la Patrie
    Conduis, soutiens nos bras vengeurs
    Liberté, Liberté chérie
    Combats avec tes défenseurs!
Sous nos drapeaux, que la victoire
    Accoure à tes mâles accents
    Que tes ennemis expirants
Voient ton triomphe et notre gloire!

    La Marseillaise - English lyrics
    Arise children of the fatherland
The day of glory has arrived
    Against us tyranny's
    Bloody standard is raised
Listen to the sound in the fields
The howling of these fearsome soldiers
They are coming into our midst
To cut the throats of your sons and consorts
To arms citizens Form your battalions
    March, march
    Let impure blood
    Water our furrows

What do they want this horde of slaves
    Of traitors and conspiratorial kings?
    For whom these vile chains
    These long-prepared irons?
Frenchmen, for us, ah! What outrage
    What methods must be taken?
It is us they dare plan
To return to the old slavery!
    What! These foreign cohorts!
They would make laws in our courts!
    What! These mercenary phalanxes
Would cut down our warrior sons
    Good Lord! By chained hands
Our brow would yield under the yoke
The vile despots would have themselves be
    The masters of destiny
    Tremble, tyrants and traitors
The shame of all good men
    Tremble! Your parricidal schemes
    Will receive their just reward
Against you we are all soldiers
If they fall, our young heros
    France will bear new ones
Ready to join the fight against you
    Frenchmen, as magnanimous warriors
Bear or hold back your blows
    Spare these sad victims
That they regret taking up arms against us
    But not these bloody despots
    These accomplices of Bouillé
    All these tigers who pitilessly
    Ripped out their mothers' wombs
    We too shall enlist
When our elders' time has come
To add to the list of deeds
    Inscribed upon their tombs
We are much less jealous of surviving them
    Than of sharing their coffins
We shall have the sublime pride
    Of avenging or joining them
    Drive on sacred patriotism
    Support our avenging arms
    Liberty, cherished liberty
Join the struggle with your defenders
    Under our flags, let victory
    Hurry to your manly tone
So that in death your enemies
See your triumph and our glory!

Whilst I empathise greatly with the French over last weekends there is no way on earth you would get me singing their national anthem or for that matter any anthem but our own British one or preferably the old school song Jerusalem. I wonder how it affects Capoue and indeed all our players, got to say the Frech national side definitely looked affected and us being the first prem game since the atrocity and live on TV could be pretty tense. The sooner we can get back to sport without considering religion and politics the better, gotta say I have a feeling my least favorite scouser is going to score in this one.

Hope Cathcart & Britos stay fit, not sure about Belkalem in the Prem, let alone Champ.

If Young plays, he´d better have the decency not to dive!

As a proud Englishman ..My football allegiance is to England and Watford in equal measure . I'm looking forward to watching Rooney .. he has been a great asset for England and a good role model for kids from a English working class background . I much prefer him to the poser Beckham .
If Watford come out on top I would not begrudge Rooney a goal or 2 . Girlfriend sitting alongside me at the Vic on sat . She had always been a Man U fan prior to me introducing her to the joys of Watford last winter. She is now a very vocal Hornet .
I know it defies logic , but I fancy a high scoring draw or 3.2 to either side .. The bitter gale force winds forecast for Saturday could make things very interesting and contribute to a freak result . I hope Gomes confidence has not have been knocked by his recent errors .

My allegiance is also to England and Watford, but my second national team these days is France. I was pleased to see England win this week, but when they are not involved it is quite easy to switch. When the rugby matches were being played it was quite clear that people on here didn't lose interest because England failed to qualify, they simply switched to a favourite second team. Maybe we are not quite as tribal as some would suggest.

Watford and England for me too. However when I lived in Wales and accepted their hospitality and kindness I was quite happy to "adopt" them in matches where England did not play. I would have loved to learn Land of my Fathers in Welsh but sadly it was beyond me.

I still blame awful organisation for allowing three of the top six rugby nations to be in one group in the World Cup. For me it died when we exited. Where was seeding when required? Yet I have heard no criticism about that

You will be alright Yorkie. They only sing the first verse and chorus. Surprised that you haven't mastered it already at the vineyard owners get togethers.

I lost interest in the British anthem when they axed the third verse. I found it amusing that any country could have an anthem that slagged off the people of part of the same country.

I did attend a 12 hour shindig in la Vedrenne a while back which ended up with it sung to bugles and hunting horns... everybody was so completely squiffy i don't think anyone knew what they were doing!

Presumably there will be a big security presence at the Vic for this game because the opposition are so high profile.

That reminds me of our village fete three years ago. Twelve huntsmen with their horns were engaged to play at two hours intervals starting at 10.00 am. Between their offerings they retired to the bar and progressively became more drunk. As the day wore on they became more and more out of tune and their numbers dropped. The final offering was part 1 of the fireworks display at 11.00 pm. By this time only seven made their way across the field and one of those fell in a heap before he reached the performance area. They have not been invited again.
