I know most people will immediately think of Alf Garnett at the mere mention of Warren Mitchell, but he was a fine Shakespearean actor as well. The Garnett character is often held up as being "racist" television, but it was in fact anti - racist as Alf always got his comeuppance and was the one who was subject to ridicule as being a dinosuar. R.I.P.
It's amazing how many people fail to realise this. Same with "Love Thy Neighbour"- the bigoted white man always got shown up for what he was. As for Warren, he was -as you say- a more accomplished actor than many realised. I must admit, though- I was surprised when I read the news of his death, I thought he'd pegged it years ago. Good innings. RIP
I caught In Sickness and in Health around the late 80's with the black guy who moves in. One of the funniest series I've ever seen. Brilliant actor even though that's all I saw of him. R.I.P.
Was that the series were he played a racist pensioner who is allocated a black nurse for home visits?
Yep that's the one. And to top off he's very camp as well iirc The comedy timing between the two was brilliant.
RIP, I too had assumed he had passed away years ago. Till Death was in the 70's! The guy seems about 65 even then, guess he must have been much younger.
It first started in 1965. His son-in-law (Scouse Git) was played by Tony Booth-Cherie Blair's dad. There's a time machine involved here somewhere.
