Its more a movement than sect (i incorrectly kept using that word earlier) it is akin to the unitarian christian movement. That to be Muslim you must adhere literally to the religious texts and reject any later "interpretations". From what little reading I have done on it. It's creation was bound tightly to the Saud ruling family. Luckily for them part of the belief is absolute obedience to the ruler (as long as they continue to be a "proper" muslim. While IS wasn't created by the Saudis per se they follow the wahhabi tradition which the Saudis have spent billions to export worldwide most closely, compared to other radical movements. Their ranks are full of young Saudis because of this. They didn't mind IS to begin with because of this and the fact they were trying to remove Iranian backed Assad. There has always been the tension between the Saudi clerics and ruling family due to the continued relationship with non believers like the yanks and us. If France does make a sustained attempt to obliterate IS and we and others join in it'll become a sticky situation for Saudi rulers when good old faithful saudis start dying. Maybe im being tinfoil hat but as horrible as the idea of an IS ruled Saudi is it would finally force the US/GB hand. You couldn't keep turning a blind eye, your arms clients would be gone and the oil doesnt matter as much any more. If we didnt remove them, Russia or China would to shape the ME the way they would like it. Unfortunately the games played in this area will long continue...
