That's fair enough and would certainly be within your rights to do. The problems are (as I think Beth implies) that, once someone else has suggested it from outside your community, even if it was already being planned, it looks forced and you cannot tell whether someone is doing the march genuinely or is doing so out of fear of being villified for not doing so. Couple that with the security risk - it gives every not job a chance to avenge the acts of the extremists on the moderates by having a large group together with an X on their backs. Also, any unsavoury minority (either jihadist or anti-Muslim) would love for it to end in violence thus causing tensions that the country could do without.
I note that Manuel Valls the French Prime Minister has called for France to step up it's actions in Syria to 'annihilate' ISIS. Not before time, this is the only dialogue these barbarians understand. I also note that in speeches they are now referring to ISIS as 'Daesh', an insulting Arabic reference to them as bigots. ISIS threaten to cut out the tongue of anyone describing them as such, so that's what I'll refer to them as from now...
Hmm...I'd say it would be well received personally. And even the EDF aren't going to cause trouble at a march to condemn ISIS/Daesh. All a matter of opinion which won't be tested because it ain't gonna happen
Not saying the Greeks are wrong but now been confirmed at least 3 attackers were French nationals. The passport found, so it seems, could possibly of been stolen or forged as ISIS have very good reasons for the west to blame this wave of Immigrants............. Hopefully things will become clearer in the next few days.....
Staging marches is not the answer and is pointless and is asking for trouble. We need to stand firm and talk (to the right people) We need to back people that will fight ISIS on the ground where they are, with our help We need to be fair and rationale, with no knee jerk reactions
No, no, no! We don't want to be fair. We don't want to be careful. We need to crush this once and for all. Thank goodness some of you weren't around in the late 1930s. How many chances would you have given the Nazis? Mustn't upset anyone eh?
Yes indeed. I saw a clip earlier where there were a few loud bangs in Paris and there was almost a stampede. It was probably the local youth letting off fire crackers. It's a terrible situation out there and probably in most major European cities at present. Just what the terrorists want. What a sad and unpleasant world we live in at the moment.
A march by Muslims would show what exactly? That they're not all as evil as nazis? Nobody's talking about being fair to ISIS but nearly all marches end in some small scuffle and sometimes worse depending on nutjobs and troublemakers. Surely the risk of creating an "us and them" situation with moderate Muslims is not worth the risk? I doubt the security forces would allow it anyway.
We do want to be fair We do want to be rationale But we also want to crush Isis We want to terribly upset and harm Isis We don't want to appease them On the other hand we don't want to scoop up the innocent with the guilty. What's wrong with that?
I wasn't just responding about the marches. I believe that we have been far too lenient in the past and that people's concerns over human rights for terrorists etc is leading us to sleep walk into a complete nightmare. IMO this is the fight of our lifetime. The difference with this war is that the enemy are from within and all the pious platitudes about unity won't disguise that fact. Societies in the West aren't united and it's getting worse and worse. This is as big a challenge for us as the two World wars were imo. I'd ask all those that get all up tight about the monitoring of our emails etc; does it matter if your emails etc get spied on if you and your family are kept safe? Maybe we can't have both privacy and security?!! France have declared that this was an act of war and that they will be ruthless etc. But all these years of relative peace since the 2nd World War have softened our instincts for self preservation and survival. Our soft instincts are to reach out and show understanding. We need to toughen up imo. To be merciless is what is needed to defeat evil and that hasn't really been apparent since the 2nd World war, hence my reference to the Nazis. Please don't think that I want all this. I don't want to kill anyone. I don't want to tell anyone what to believe or how to live. But for the sake of my children and their children we MUST get tough!
BBC still wall to wall on this, not surprising as half their staff are now in Paris, a vivid contrast to the coverage of Beirut and Ankara. Also getting very editorial, Nick Robinson on his Today programme debut offering 'thoughts and prayers' to a relation of one of the victims. Not what I need from a news reader Nick. Also stop finishing your interviewees' sentences for them, it's rude. And now he's just cocked up the pips. Cameron was quite good, though he's still vague on action in the territory formerly known as Syria. Seems to me that those countries with decent intelligence and security services should be offering, or demanding, to be given some powers to work in Belgium which is a shambles. There was one very good interviewee, French I think, who pointed out that Daesh is just the current threat, which will be militarily beaten, just as Al Quaeda was, but the problem is radical Jihad, it like a hydra. My extension of this is that we have allowed political movements, including terrorism, to morph into this religious fanaticism. Look at what has happened with the Palestinians - the PLO may have done terrible things, but you could negotiate with it and its aims were understandable. Now we are dealing with people who simply want to obliterate us and who think negotiation is a waste of time (with some justification). Anyone who thinks what they do on the internet is secure or private in any way, or should be, is sadly deluded, it doesn't bother me that the government is able to look at what I'm up to along with the dozens of commercial interests and private individuals who want to waste their time in that way. But it does highlight a fact - it is easier to carry out a terrorist attack in a relatively 'open' society than in a police state. And I'd still prefer to live in the open society. Get the balance wrong and you have problems beyond fundamentalist nutters.
Now thats a post When the BBC starts putting on the deaths that happen daily then I may watch them. French gunman at gatwick overtook the 43 killed last week in the Middle East. Was it a gun? I have witnessed this year two pocket knives taken from hand luggage by forgetful fisherman CIA has relationship with ISIS All swept under the carpet IMO The fear shown understandable but how does that make us look? Reports of the French dropping 20 bombs ... Hooray they have been doing that daily anyway and is that courage who are they killing? Politics won't allow troops ... They can't afford it plus the outfall is harder to spin. The world has it in its power to slap ISIS so why doesn't that happen?
I would like to see something heavy sort this out IMO Find targets and show the world what nasty really is. We are after all pretty much pretending we run on any God in the west.
