Ok lets keep this simple as the wider debate will detract from the point.

Corbyn is still getting **** for his wouldn't push the button quote.

So the Question, if you are the man and we are fired on with a nuclear weapon and hundreds of thousands of innocent people in the UK are about to die would you push the button and fire back in order to kill hundreds of thousands of innocent people?

    An interesting question.

On the one hand... REVENGE... Can't let the enemy win.

On the other hand... Why kill innocents many of whom have no responsibility for you being about to die?

Let's make up an imaginary country: Bumfucia to keep politics out of it.

UK goes to war with Bumfucia. Bumfucia launches a nuke at us... Do I respond.

    Depends:

    1) Will anyone in UK survive onslaught? Is this one nuke or many?

    2) If there will be survivors- will they possibly be subject to invasion by Bumfucia?

    3) Is Bumfucia under an oppresive regime?

If Bumfucia winning the war means people will be oppressed or the conquer Britain and subject her people to oppression...

Then yes I press the button.

If this is just one rogue nuke I may hold off. Same, if we're all going to die and Bumfucia isn't oppressive... What will killing their citizens achieve?

Nukes are a deterrent, if someone has fired at you, the nukes have lost their only value.

When one pushes the button they all push the button. Makes no difference, what's another hundred nukes on top of the US and Russia's thousands. Might as well fire them, extra fireworks :D

    I vote yes

Yep. It is the equivalent to saying "I ****ing wouldn't if I was you mate"

I would probably selfishly push it out of immense anger, how long would you get to let your rational thinking kick back in??

The only reason to actually fire back would be to prevent invasion after you were nuked. Otherwise you are just mincing a load of civvies cos the goernment that attacked you, as we know, will be ensconced in bunkers. So two governments essentially wipe out each other's population but the governments survive. Comfortably too, not basic survival <laugh>

Something bothers me about that but I can't quite put my finger on it. <whistle>

Also if you launch a nuke it raises the probability of some nuking you.

During war with Egypt Israel came close to launching nuclear weapons at one point when they felt they were losing.

They feared using nuclear weapons would bring Russia into the war in a nuclear capacity... That's all that prevented them. (although the order was still given to use them if Egypt continued to win... But the tide turned so no nuke got fired).

One of the few times I'll say thank goodness Russia has nukes. <ok>

/ although I bet the US would have used them again by now if no rival power had them.

Ahem "US government", I am as guilty as anyone for that. <laugh> I have a hard time imagining Herb and Judy with their apple pie cooling on a window sil.. and a nuke silo out back <laugh>

Texans would probably like some nukes :bandit:

But true, any nation that was a sole nuke power, the government would probably use them without a deterrent.

In this case, an all out war, Britain bringing it's nukes to the party is like bringing firecrackers to the 4th of july celebrations. Smoke em if you got em, PUSH! <laugh>

The systems are probably set up for auto retaliation in any event, just in case the button pusher is sleeping on the job.

The day I have had today I would push the button first the way I am feeling.

@Red Hadron Collider wouldn't need an incoming nuke to press the button. A few rowdy hours at the cheese one button press later and France would be toasty.

Does anyone think any country (not some ragtag terrorist group btw) would actually launch a nuke as a first strike?
