Yeah I'd love to hang to him for another season, I suppose it depends on how well he does from now till the end of the season.

I hope he meant two seasons from now. That is, after another two seasons [as you well know I meant, of course].

It depends on a few things including how long his contract is so that Saints can say, not this season Sadio, maybe next.

His contract runs through 2018; I'd think it likely that he is sold this upcoming summer, assuming that he isn't eager to sign a new contract.

'Likely' with two years left? I think he'll go this next summer because someone will get in his ear, not because there's two years left. I'm hoping we give him a nice big pay bump on an extended deal that keeps him next season too and then if we haven't progressed enough this or next season, he's still doing it and the big clubs want him, that we then move him for a big fee.

Of course he may want to stay and experience Champions League football with us by then :)

These days, it seems like two years remaining on one's contract is the time when teams feel compelled to sell; let it get run down to a single season and it's difficult to get anything approaching full value. Consequently, if Mane doesn't re-up, I doubt we'd block a move.

Victor had 2 years on his contract remaining. Saints said no. I can understand they will want to recoup some money with a year to go, but not two years. So I agree with Beefy's assertion that Mane will go in at the end of the 2017 season. Of course, as FLT says, he may stay.

I always get the impression from Ronald that unless it's one year to go and they won't extend then they have to honour their contract. Obviously if he acts like a giant pain in the arse they may change their minds.

It isn't always the length of contract or even how much you can get...it is the value to the team. Hence, we may be willing to lose value on a player if he is viewed as essential. Lose a few million on his sale price, but have another good season. We couldn't let Victor go because Morgan had gone...now we can begin to see a light at the end of a tunnel and have had another year to look for cover. I'm thinking we may keep Mane another season as he is seen as a very creative player.

Beefy said within 2 years, not at the end of 2017 season. There is a subtle difference there.

That's the key bit. I think as I mentioned earlier, that we will say no and offer him a bumper pay rise. He can take that knowing that he can still get a move summer of 2017 and earn more money in the meantime.

My biggest fear ref Mané is that Man U can offer him a deal that would render what we class a "bumper pay rise" pretty insignificant. If I recall, when he joined there was talk of his seeing us as a first step into the Premier League. I have no hope whatsoever of our keeping him next summer, at which point I expect Saintsweb will spontaneously combust.

Vic had two years remaining, but his sale price isn't going to be anywhere near that of Mane's, in all likelihood; we'll recoup less than if we had sold this summer, but that's acceptable, as it was when we ultimately took below value for Clyne. We also seem to have thought that we could re-sign him to a longer deal, given that we publicized negotiations to that effect.

Running Mane down to a single season, if we aren't very confident of extending him, is a different story; with a good season, he will fetch a pretty substantial price. I cannot see us undermining our leverage (and potentially costing ourselves eight figures) if there are offers on the table.

I imagine stuff is already sorted for Victor to go in the summer and perhaps Vilhena coming in.

I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't already planned this summer, but the unfortunate events around his mum put it on hold.

perhaps that is why Vic was unhappy...

And I think the reduced price with only one season to go depends on how desirable the player is. If United really want Mane, they could be made to pay the same price if he had 1 or 2 seasons left on his contract. The owner sets the price.

Good points well made. On that basis the "loss" on Vic's fee from last summer to next will have probably been worth it. Plus the factor that losing Morgan and Vic could have done quite a lot of damage.

I think this thread was designed to discuss who we might bring in in January and not who might be leaving in the summer? Do we actually need anybody? a striker perhaps?

Certainly, though Man U being Man U, it's doubtful that they wait two seasons...they'll find another shiny bauble, and Mane's market will change.
