This is it. I suspect there's no "conspiracy", no "unsettling" (bar maybe Spurs) just pure commercial interest from the papers. If you run a newspaper you need new material at a frightening rate. In the old days, papers had teams of journalists doing a good job in digging for stories. Now they have much smaller news staff but the same need for material.

So, as a journalist, you can:

    a. Track down Les Reed and spend a couple of days with him researching the academy and following a match day for an in-depth news article about how Saints is run.

    b. Choose the name of a player who looked to have done well on Saturday's Match of the Day. What's his name? Mané. Him. He's good. OK, who shall I pair him with? (journalists are ungrammatical enough to say something in that manner, by the way). Man U. Here goes: "Sources at Manchester United say they are keen to sign....."

Story a takes three days and appeals to Southampton fans and thus receives 200 clicks.

Story b takes three and a half minutes, appeals to Man U fans the world over and thus receives 20,000 clicks.

Doubt if there will be any movement during the next window.....Injuries aside that is......Cant see them letting any of the stars go mid season as that has not been our style for quite a few years now. Even Gaston probably will not be allowed to go until the summer.

Agreed, and in some respects that's worse. An evil cabal of big clubs and papers out to get us? At least that would be a plan. I can respect a good plan. The reality of media sowing chaos wherever they can for a few more advertising dollars is so damned banal in its evilness.

Same reason you see more "BIG CLUB IN CHAOS" or "PLAYER AT BIG CLUB IN SHOCKING BEHAVIOUR SCANDAL: HE WORE MISMATCHED SOCKS!" stories than one would about, I dunno, Watford. And it's not just aimed at fans of that specific big club; run a story about a Man U transfer and you'll get clicks from their fans, the fans of the other team, Man U's rivals, and probably a lot of neutrals as well. The tabloid media does not play sides, they do not engage in conspiracies; they are parasitic agents of chaos, and their actions are on full display on the front page. A tapeworm doesn't aim to cause you harm, it just does as a natural matter of course.

Do Man U have a file on Mane? Course they do.
Do Spurs have a file on Wanyama? Dead cert.

Clubs monitor other players all the time. The black box probably has its own external hard drive full of info about the Eredivisie. Doesn't mean we're going to sign anyone. That's why "X targets Y" stories are so easy to write. It's the football version of "SAS on standby".

Hard enough fending off the other clubs...now the SAS is thinking of raiding us for players? Fear turning them back is a job only Cortese could accomplish.

If Gaston leaves then we might go for a loan, but i'm not expecting anything. Stek on a perm would be a nice move. Does anyone know when his Fulham contract expires?

I think Gaston will probably stay for the money. He will most likely have to take a significant pay cut to go to Italy and so a nice signing on fee would help that.

We can get our transfer fix next summer. Like this time last year when we were expecting Clyne & Morgan to leave, i'm pretty sure Wanyama will go and i'm 70/30 Mane will be off. As for Pelle, reckon he will see out Koemans contract.

Just a good thing this isn't happening a couple years ago; would have been unfortunate when David had to be waterboarded alongside Poch.

Two seasons is fine by me. We'll have a replacement or two in by then.

Fair enough, he's just signed new deal anyway hasn't he? No one more deserving than that man to be our top earner. Proper club man.

As for the Summer I reckon Vic & Mane will be gone.

Victor probably....I'm hoping we can resist even stupid money for Mane. Not as if he wouldn't sell for big money the year after.
