Hmm the early restriction is worrying like. I love simulations so think I'll enjoy that aspect but certainly sounds like there's a few issues in how they've gone about it.

Doing a few Brotherhood of Steel missions and have had some great experiences thus far. Found an industrial area filled with super mutants. They attack me and I had to flee to the river's edge with them in hot pursuit. Swam across, turned and saw a group of them in a fight with two mirelurkers (one was the hunter type and I adore the new look of them) then suddenly everything blew to bits and I mean everything. A super mutant kamikaze exploded himself taking every **** with him! So I swam back across thinking the area would be low defended and was proved wrong and repulsed. So I withdrew to some burnt out houses, climbed some stairs and looked back to see if I could sniper any of the bastards and saw around five of them in a fight to the death with a ****ing deathclaw and the poor bastard was clubbed and shot to death!

I love this game. Had a crash today but nothing to get to pissed off about.

Do you feel like you are gate-crashing a Nerd's Convention? They seem to be ignoring you now. Dont worry - that bloody game of Coyote Canyon will be over soon and you will have a someone to talk to again.

So maybe quick judgement isn't the right way to look at FO4. It's all a bit intense if you go hap-hazard; I did the first Brotherhood mission then answered "maybe" to his question. Not ready to be a soldier, it's not "me", but that's the point - don't make the decision for the sake of it, besides which I'd already got his kick-ass rifle. I think the point is there are big things roaming everywhere and you have to work out if you should just run at it, shoot at it or - as is more realistic/sensible/obvious - just watch it pass you by from a bush. Having gone to the second settlement quest, i was directed to a clothes shop in some Boston district (The Fell? Fenn?). So I went, quietly (Power Armour is back at the garage), en route and kept a low profile watching the excellent bracket system for hiding. As it narrowed, I noticed a troop of 6 Super Mutes on the march to some battle at the edge of hearing. Save game - attack mutants - die horribly. Reload, WATCH mutants from afar til they've fcked off, then carry on to my destination. Bit of sneaky attacks, shoot out with some raiders, mission completed.

So at this point decided not to bother with missions for a while, went back to Sanctuary and am currently trekking east past the (now cleared) Olivia Array and have just found/killed Boomer and his gang to set up a sweet little place to kick back for a while. Only got attacked by some dogs and rats before the fight, and all of a sudden I'm easing into the Wasteland again, accepting it for what it is and it's all coming together nicely. My weapons are still mostly crap and I've not found a decent lick of armour to support my stealthy character, but then again why would I?

Just to add, as the Cap'n is feeling a little neglected, I am toying with the idea of launching a new Werewolf-type game with a Fallout theme. I haven't got great swathes of time so - although applauding the effort - I couldn't wrap my head around the complexities of the cowboy game. I like it simpler. He's bad/he's good/no he's not/kill him anyway. Once it's done, I'll post the idea.
