I have found an excellent formula for eating well on a budget. When I come out of the gym after my daily swim the local Morrisons has just reduced the near sell by stuff. It yilds some fantastic food at bargain prices. Last night Mrs CT and myself had an excellent Beef Wellington reduced from £6 to £2.49. Fillet steak for less than twenty five shillings a head! Coq au Vin tonight at £1.99

I have wondered if It's worth popping to my local Morrisons at night to see if they are selling off bread and stuff for cheap. Didn't think about the meats and things like Beef Wellington. How long before closing was this, that you went in?

We have a large Morrisons in Dereham and they start selling off stuff cheap from the bakery and hot deli counter sometimes as early as 6:00PM. If you leave it later than that there are real bargains to be had but you're then taking pot luck. Got two whole hot roast chickens for £ 2.00 each the other week at 9:00PM, had one for supper and the other cold in sarnies <ok>

Hmm, I will have to pop into mine one evening, especially in the lead up to Christmas with all the extra expenditure. Do they put all the clearance stuff on special display areas? Or are all the items in the areas they usually are? Just with a reduced price sticker on it?

Cushty! Might see you in there.

I'm veggie, so won't elbow you out of the way of the chickens! <laugh><ok>

I think they have a policy of reducing my a minimal amount at any time. The next step is half price, I normally go in mid PM and some stuff is marked down 50% then. After that it's pot luck and it can go as high as a 90% reduction, often the deli stuff. My best buy was a dozen oysters for 20p.

For those of us living in the foreign parts where food is mainly fish and rice, reading about beef Wellington and roast chickens is torture. If anyone mentions crisps I'm going to the pinkun site.

If you live quite close to a major supermarket (or M&S Foodhall), it's worth checking to see at approximately what time they do their final mark down and it's usually to about 25%. My best buy was a side of fresh salmon in Tesco, reduced from £9.90 to 99p - I only bought 2!!!

Blimey! There's a whole world of opportunity! Are the sell by dates usually that day? Things like oysters and Salmon I would probably not buy. How long would they last before they went iffy?

Yes, they are always that day and I've eaten Thai Fragrant Beef from M&S the next day with no ill effects, but would probably be OK after a couple of days, but not for children/elderly. Some products can be frozen as well, such as the salmon.

Yea, true. Get them in the freezer as soon as you're home. I suppose the already frozen stuff is fine for a while?

Sell/use by dates are largely bollox. I bought 4 litres of milk on Nov 5th for 78p. I just had coffee made with the last of it five days after. If its off it turns to lumps when you pour it in.

I always go to our local Tesco and ask at the deli counter what joints of meat are bearing their sell by dates.
I often get a joint of cooked beef, ham or turkey reduced.
The best saving was a joint of beef. The sell by date was the same day. I asked how much for the whole lot.
It came to £36. I asked them to do me a deal for the whole thing. I got it for a fiver.

Even better result was that my mum was so embarrassed by my 'haggling' in Tesco, that she doesn't ask me to help her with her shopping now <ok>

Changing he subject slightly, but keeping it "general", I'm currently enjoying my first ever Centerparcs experience with the family - it's absolutely bloody brilliant, can't believe I've never been here before!

Definitely the best fun I've ever had in Suffolk <ok>

I've never been, but have friends and family who go there, and say that it's brilliant. I don't really know much about what you do there, apart from swimming and bike riding.
