We are talking about obligations and guilt - Germany has learned from it's past, has Britain done the same ? Is it not still the case that a large number of English people still see the 'Empire' in a positive light, and the loss of it as a sign of decline ?

No we don't need immigration at present levels because the migrants become dependents later. The UK is already one of the most populated by density. Another solution should be found, like temporary visas for workers.

Some sharia law practices are to me too abhorrent. Sharia law is a later adaption to the basic tenets of Islam.

In a way it compares with some of the practices in the name of Christianity in the middle ages.

For me the problem lies within people, regardless of their religion... there will always be those who choose to murder, loot and pillage, a civilised society needs to protect itself against those.

I don't think many people think of the 'British Empire' at all.

In my opinion Germany is still putting its own needs above all others. It controls Europe both politically and financially. It would like to grab as much of London's financial business as possible to boost its own centre in Frankfurt.
I'm beginning to see the UK's future outside of the EU.

There is a view that the Empire was great. Clearly Great Britain used the colonies for asset stripping and gathering wealth. There was nothing altruistic about it.

Is everyone a bit ratty because of the disappointing matter of defeat on Saturday, the current horrible grey weather or just miserable old gits?

Maybe I should get you all doing some physical work on my estate, then you wouldn't have to worry about such matters. By the way the weather is lovely.

Sorry Frenchie, I'm ratty cause I've had two days raking leaves plus I've got 40 metres of close boarded fencing to put up over the next few days with another old codger helping me with knees worse than mine.

    Hope the redox works!!

Exactly, "we are dealing with a new generation", just as the current and indeed previous generation and lets be honest the majority of Hitlers generation were not responsible for the holocaust nor are the population of Britain responsible for the crimes of the aristocracy. My head is high if Germany wants to take in Nigerians, Syrians, Libyans, Turks whatever they are welcome to but don't expect to offload any here and expect to see a restriction on migratio based upon place of birth not nationality of passport. Russians and Poles suffered far more at the hands of the Russians than they ever did as a result of the Germans.

We agree on this point. I would allow islam if it sorted its own problem and shopped the terrorists and dealt wit them in one of its own countries once deported and by dealt I do mean killed.

Don't either those or work permits already exist for people from certain countries?

And in the good old days I would have gone off and had a *** - but I've been weed free for just over 9 months now (after propping up the weed industry for 40 years) - so the rattyness is still very present.

I'm sure work permits exist but maybe the Australian system would be preferential. Obviously need to leave the EU first though.

yes sadly wiped out Buddhism in whole swathes of the country...... Mind you I don't think many invading armies have been very peaceful. The rape of women has been present in every invading army in all the continents for example.

I have been a supporter of the Tibetan people and 100s of thousands were killed by Maos armies in the late 50s and 60s.. The torture of monks and nuns by Chinese police and army forces is well documented. I have seen the wounds myself.

I dont think Islam or Christianity or Communism per se are the causes. I think it is part of human nature at its most basic.

What exactly is this supposed to prove - other than further fanning the flames of Islamophobia ? The Islamic conquest and control over India was over by the 18th Century - at a time in which Catholics in Europe still believed that the Lisbon earthquake was God's punishment for the fact that not enough Protestants had been burned. Maybe it would be better to look at present day India (the most multi cultural nation on Earth) and ask the question why, although the Moslem population there is the second largest in the World, there are so few radicalized Indian Moslems - are there any people from India swelling the ranks of ISIS or Al Quaida, no. Present day Indian Islam is characterized more by Sufism which promotes tolerance and multi faith worship - and Hinduism is by nature multi faith. Most of the radicals who swell the ranks of Islamic terrorist organizations either come from states which have had close contacts to the west or were, themselves, brought up in the West - maybe we should ask why that is so.

Good point well made Cologne. i have traveled to and in India many times over the past 25 years... and seen zero evidence of these called negative side of Islam..... i am happy to call many of these people work colleagues, students and friends.

India is one of the most peaceful places in the world.... fanned every year or so in one or two cities by nationalist Hindus in the main which results in a riot... and then all calm again.
