Of course Stephen Hunt gave us around 9 minutes as the top team in the country!

I remember them being top then also
There was a 2 page section in the news of the world calling Dyer the humber snipper
I remember them playing Watford a couple of days later think it was around November
    It went downhill after that

What is probably unique about this season is that we are ( certainly after yesterday) almost universally regarded as having the best team the best squad and the most likely to be promoted. Great great days .
It seems to me that this is essentially the squad Bruce was assembling last year and one he thought would establish itself in the premier league

You’re probably right about things ****ing up after the Watford game but it wouldn’t have been in November.

It’d have been in January in the cup as they were a very respectable First Division side back then. John Barnes, Luther B, Callaghan, Tony Coton et al all playing for them. We did well too: drew at their place; then drew at BP in the replay with Elton J supposedly coming to Hull in a helicopter (presumably landing at Hymers). We ended up losing in the 2nd replay though 1-0.

I remember things going wrong after we beat TWS at home in the new year – so this tallies with you remembering the slump being after Watford, as they were both, as stated, in January.

I also recall some sort of two page spread in one of the tabloids with Brian Horton dreaming of the First Division.

Barnes was at Liverpool by then - among my friends 87/88 is known as "The John Barnes season", when he laid waste to the league with the help of Beardsley and Aldridge.

I remember watching City as league leaders in Terry Neill's first season. We really did think we would go up that season. The win at Brammal Lane seemed to confirm it but we just fell away after that.

Neill signed a couple of players in about March (Knighton and Baxter). City might have gone up if he hadn't done that. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

^^This - I feel Terry Neill ripped the heart out of the team, they were aging but I think he phased Chillo, Houghton and Butler out too early, Knighton and Baxter were both good signings but their was an air of deja-vu for the last third of the season ............... same old City was the feeling of the time.

Not answering the question but weren't we joint top of the Premier League when we kicked off first on the first day and drew at Chelsea?

Chelsea's season stats would have been exactly the same as ours but unfortunately we would have been behind them on alphabetical order. :emoticon-0106-cryin

Elton John landed in a helicopter in front if the old clock stand in a league game about 77 not sure he did it again.

Yes, but that is only for presentational purposes. It doesn't count as being ahead of us otherwise.

Was there for every home match in season 1949/50 and we were never top. Tottenham had a great season starting top for a couple of games before slipping and going to the top again after 5 matches and remaining there to the end.

We did reach second place, looking good for promotion until fading away after February.
