I think too many injuries early in his career did Fabio in. I always thought Rafa was great, a player with true passion for United, unfortunately he had a habit of blanking out defensively at least twice per match which cost too many goals.
Rafa wrote that Fergie played a huge part in his success here. Took him under his wing. Seems to be a proper timid guy and once Fergie went, according to him, he knew his United career was over. One player you could never question their commitment.
I don't think Fergie worried too much about the odd defensive blank, we had the players to cover it (if not, we just scored more goals)
