On the subject of penalties, VVD nearly had his shirt pulled off his back, a few times today, at corners, but yet another ref turned a blind eye, despite having carded Johnson for a similar offence, and awarding a free kick, when I thought a counter attack was still on, first half.
Shirt tugging appears only to be clear cut, when it is outside of the area.

Outstanding refereeing for the Remy chance.

    Kudos to Remy too.

Remy's jump over Butlands challenge is the most honest thing a Chelsea employee has done this season, shame because we could have done with the inform Jacky boy missing the next match. D'oh.

I'm with Shearer, that should still be a penalty.

I don't like Chelsea, & I think they've brought a lot of problems on themselves, but its sad that people like that steward are ready to stick the knife in just for a few headlines when there's nothing doing.

The laws state that a foul is a trip or attempt to trip a player. There doesn't have to be contact. Butland tried to trip Remy.

Yup. He had to jump over a challenge which did not reach the ball. In having to jump he was impeded.
But I can see why it wasn't given. I'm glad Chelsea have slid again.

I am as well, because beyond the rules, if you're penalizing a player for trying to stay on their feet and create a goal, there's a problem. Remy could trail a leg and there'd be zero doubt about the result.

The thing is, how many referees would give that? No contact, the keeper would have to be sent off if you gave the penalty. That's a hell of a call to make and with the pressure referees are under these days it's totally understandable Taylor didn't give it.

No no no. If you are going to give fouls because someone jumps over a challenge then the game is finished as a tackling sport. As for encouraging diving, so what. Let the referee sort that out. I am certainly not entertaining that one as a foul because he put Remy off. Even Remy didn't protest.

The goalkeeper made a challenge and didn't get to the ball. Had the challenge not been made Remy would have been in control of the ball in a clear 1 on 1 goalscoring opportunity. Because of his challenge he was denied a goal scoring opportunity = penalty. It was only remys honesty and athleticism that stopped this being a stonewall penalty.
I'm not suggesting football should be a non contact sport but a penalty was deserved. I hate Chelsea but I also hate cheating divers. This does nothing to discourage dishonestly. If it were in any other area of the pitch I would agree but the fact remains he was denied a clear chance through no fault of his own by a challenge that did not touch the ball.
The only positive is we didn't have to listen to that obnoxious little twat after.

Oh and as for 'letting the refs sort it out', havent they been doing that for years? Yet the problem gets worse and worse. IMO diving is far more detrimental to the sport than the fact that it has softened up in the last 20years.

I agree on this, but would you not say it was a F***ing stupid decision that he got wrong then?

I wouldn't, but then again I thought Vic's challenge was understandable last week too.

(Apologies to all, but I find it incredible that a decision from a ref in the heat and flash point of a game is understandable, but one in the same environment and pressure from a Saints player is called "F***ing stupid. I hereby promise I will not respond to any response Tom makes to this as I don't want to bore people anymore, but I really needed to make this point, as it baffles me where fans loyalties lie)

Just seen the Chelsea game, they aren't getting much luck at the moment and low on confidence.

Definite penalty, Remy had to leap to avoid contact.
