Right, following on from Ponders' excellent suggestion... here we go with 2 lists... legends vs cult heroes: Legends: Derek Hales, Mark Kinsella, Matty Holland, Chris Powell, Robbo, Darren Bent, Clive Mendonca, Andy Hunt, Cult Heroes: Leaburn, Kishishev, Stevie Brown, Robbo, Feeeeeesh, Jorge Costa, Sasa Ilic, Eddie Youds, Add, edit, delete at your leisure! No apologies for Robbo being in both... have you seen my photo?
I think Kish would admit that it was MY idea, but he first mentioned cult favourites. So yes, credit to us both - and credit to VR for starting the thread. Cult heroes - Leaburn, Fish, Steve Jones, Johnny Rob, Costa, David Whyte, Di Canio, Garry Nelson. Legends - Super Clive, Keith Jones, Andy Hunt, Sasa Ilic, Kinsella, Simon Webster, Benty, Gritty, Colin Walsh, Kiely - and of course those that I never saw in the flesh. C**t heroes - Redfearn, Marcus Bent, Ambrose, Pranny Jeffers, Pawel Abbott and the list goes on...
I'd agree with all except Keith Jones. All for tackling midfielders, but I only ever saw him play one forward pass... albeit in the play-off final!
Legends of my life time Curbs, Gritt, Kinsella, Parker, Jensen, Webbster, Minto, Robbo, Rufus, Lennie, Shirtlif, Walsh, Johhny H, Morts Cult heros Leaburn, Sweaty Balmer, Big fat Pete, Kim grant (5/12/95), Kish, Brownie, Hunt, Mendonca, Nelson, El Kalkori, HH
You see, the play-off final - it was Keith Jones' forward pass which led to us winning on penalties - very strange! Anyway, Vinny Sideways is a legend at Spurs.
Scotty Parker as a legend? Now that's controversial. Can't believe I missed Elk off the cult heroes list, though! Good call. + Rob Lee as legend.
Legends Deano, Johnny H, Robert Lee,Mendonca,Halesy,Kinsella,Shirtliff,colin Walsh,Bolder.Rufus,Curbs ,Gritty Cult Big Mig,Leaburn ,Dave Shipperley,Jeff Wood,Nelson,Kish,Somedo,Whyte,El K,costa ,Romedahl,Les Berry,
I would actually think Halesy was more of a cult hero to the covered end as opposed to a legend, though in all honesty he could go in both camps.
Good shout on Rob lee. Can't believe I forgot him. But what is it that makes a cult hero? Can anybody explain it? It seems that they have some sort of quirky factor about them. It could be a slight madness, a temper, a funny name or strange appearance. Or is it the position they play in? Some players are solid over a long time but are neither legends or cult heroes: Luke Young, Mark Reid, Andy Peake et al.
Parker is a legend in my eyes. Made our team click for 2 years in the premiership- winning battles against some of the best players the league has ever seen.
How about the following: The Unsung Hero – The player that does not make the headlines but always gives 110% without fail. When he’s out of the team you realise what an important player he is. The Trouble Maker – The villain who the opposition love to hate but you love them for exactly that. Whether it’s their crunching tackles, or moaning to the referee, it’s always a fiery encounter when they are on the field. Mr Charlton – Joining the club as a youngster and playing out his whole career at the club. This Cult Hero is in the fans’ hearts forever although he may not have been the best they’ve ever seen, his loyalty is seen as something far greater. It’s in the Name – Everyone loves a good football chant and some players’ names are just asking for it and in return they become a hit with the fans. Both Costa and Semedo fall into this category. So bad, they’re good – In some cases the Cult Hero stems from the player being so bad that they actually have an ironic following by supporters. That striker who never seems to score but always finds a way into the first team, Carl Leaburn anybody?
I fear Rifleman's 'So bad, they're good' description is leading to Paul Benson becoming a cult hero for all the wrong reasons.
Funny how Paddy Powell is never thought of as a legend or a Cult hero. All those goals he made for Flash & Killer.
