Mbabu is a doubt with a shoulder injury I think. Not sure if he'll be ready for Saturday.

We've looked half decent going forward this year. Why not go a bit more offensive against a newly promoted team who have lost their most potent attackers to injury?

    ---------Perez----Mitrovic-----------

    ------Wijnal-------------Sissoko-------

    Dummett--Colo--Mbemba--Janmaat

Its all 4 4 2 anyway it's not as if the players are restricted that much and if they are it more often confuses players.

But a diamond gives you 2 triangles for the cost of only 1 extra player. What's not to like?

Diamond shmiamond. It's just something to look pretty on a team sheet. How the hell is a diamond midfield going to defend against any other formation? Answer: It can't; it will need to revert to a flat 4 in midfield, and more often than not one of the strikers drop deep to make a 5th man in midfield. The opposition would walk through them otherwise. Formations (should) really only matter in terms of defence IMHO and then it's almost always going to be what I just said, 4 or 5 in midfield, with the 4 defenders behind. The attacking players should play where there is space (much of which they should be creating themselves) when the team has possession of the ball. Never mind 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, and especially 4-4-2 (diamond). Far too much emphasis is put on this than the style of play, the tempo and manipulating/utilising the space on the pitch.

As CC says these formations are all bolxxxks anyway. The way you play is based on who you pick. If SM selects Anita and Tiote they are going to both play deep, wijnaldum will always play an attacking version of a box to box midfielder, De Jong will tend to play just behind the front two, mainly cos he is too knackered to get back and Sissoko will just wander around everywhere and often not track back when they are attacking. He also knows if he picks Mitro and Perez that Perez will be helping out in midfield as well, whereas if Cisse plays he will get less assistance in midfield.
If he has Haidara and Janmaat at full backs then he runs the risk of leaving space behind the fullbacks for oppo to run into but with Dummett he has a more solid defence but will get less going forward on the left.
You can call the formations what you like - the shape of the team will be governed by who you pick and their style of playing.
I like the make up of Tash's team for an away game.

It's not something that doesn't happen naturally in any 4 4 2 and was invented by idiots trying to justify a wage.

"Rob Elliot has overcome a thigh problem to spare Newcastle a goalkeeping crisis, with 18-year-old Freddie Woodman expected to be on the bench.

Full-backs Daryl Janmaat and Kevin Mbabu are also fit after injuries."
