Aye, but Shearer wasn't a rational call it was an "oh **** we're staring into the abyss let's get anyone who 'gets' the club". Like Dalglish going back into Liverpool it was more about trying to keep the fans onside than actually appointing someone competent and right for the job.

I think the club should take a good look at Giggs and see if he's ready to step up. Ultimately he is either fit for the job or not, I don't think managing some smaller club will give him more credentials if he's not the right man. And it's not like he'd be going straight into the top job - he's been working on the coaching side for years now, so the club can look at what he has achieved at Utd and make an informed decision, rather than just plumping for an unknown with a big name.

As for the OP, I agree we should be looking to change manager in the summer. LVG had done a good job of stabilising the club after Moyes left, keeping hold of De Gea, getting Smalling and Mata playing well, and bringing in some quality players to give us a strong squad. But he's taken us as far as we can go imo - maybe he'll win a trophy or two over the next couple of years but his overly defensive approach means he'll achieve no more for us than Benitez achieved at Liverpool, and we should be aiming much higher.

The big question, as Chief has pointed out, is who is available and will definitely be an improvement?

Unusual to hear booing at OT last night. The natives are getting restless.

The system was better last night. Gradually the manager is listening to the fans.

A rare late night swagger from you Deidre. Couple of shandies to give you some courage? It would explain the typo (don't let HRH see it given how you've gone to town on him on the PL board).

I'd agree there and feel that his mad ways and high energy would suit Utd.

On Giggs, it's a risk but he's Utd through and through. He'd have the respect from the players instantly because of his career and what he's done at the club. Does he have the knowledge and man management skills? Only one way to find out, I don't think it would do the club any harm to appoint him, he'd approach the job in the right way and look to play attacking football.

Giggs needs to prove himself at another club by starting small, maybe Chavbus?

I don't disagree that he is united through and through. Though I see know reason why he would instantly command the respect of the players as a manager. All of his achievements were as a player. All the top managers and sought after managers are that because they have achieved something as a manager, usually with an unfashionable club.

The only booing was the substitution of Martial.

    Fellaini was then applauded on.

It's not ideal to have the managers decision booed but it costs a lot of money to sit there and be bored ****less so it's fair enough that there's a bit of restlessness.

I would think that there is a respect in place for Giggs from fellow pros because of what he's done on the pitch, yes he would need to do well to gain that respect as a manager but there would certainly be some qdos, as who would want to question his appointment as undeserved?

With any appointment there's a risk but at least you would have someone in place who understands the club.

I suppose you have to look at how many players who jump straight into a top job are really successful and there simply are not many so maybe it is too much of a risk. Simeone is a manger who I was interested in taking over with us I think he's a very good manager and would do well with you lot.
