Definitely. From the old lead mining days but I think it was closer to a pie with a crimp in the middle. Nearest I have heard was something like a tiddy oggy but there is naval and mining usage of that. Billy will know.
Can't say who created it, but was it not a baker who allegedly started the great fire of London?. I heard he ran away and settled in Stanley!
Wonder how his steak and kidney pies came out? Havnt heard from him. Do you think we should phone around the hospitals?
Cheeky buggers. I didn't manage to get it made yesterday as I got roped into other things. Got the ingredients though. Will try to do it today.
The steak & kidney pie is now in the oven. Peas, carrots & onions in there too. I added red wine to the fine meaty gravy as well.
i know why they had that crust. so they could grab it with their dirty mits and eat the bestbits. didn't knar about the sweet and savoury big though? can't see how that would work like...it'd just blend together. pork n apple, anyone
We've got our local version around here. You might have seen it on one of Rick Steins local food heroes programme. It's the Sandy Clanger, savoury at one end, sweet at the other. And well nice!!
clever gits. Sandy Clanger, sounds like a right game pasty! up here you get Karelian pies, basically a small oval shaped, rye bread thing filled with a plain risotto filling. you eat it warmed in theoven, smudge of butter on top to melt, then some scrambled egg. or a meat pie: Lihapiirakka. basically a large savoury donut, filled with mince, onion and rice, deep fried after a night on the lash.
Me and our lass went into the Pooley bridge hotel and ordered chicken and mushroom pie and steak and kidney pie when they came a scally put them down in front of us i said how do you know which is which as they have the same crusts on so he just lifted the crusts off and said thats the chicken and thats the steak, dirty tw at.
