I think Cleverley will eventually play centrally more towards that Scholes role but isn't that where he was playing for Wigan? And how often was Scholes playing in the left for United and England 10 years ago? Maybe SAF is trying to groom Tom in the Scholes mould?

He might have played a lot but his role was pretty undefined IMO. It was when he just sat quite deep and his defensive qualities came to the fore. It seemed that he complimented Anderson or Giggs very well (two of our more attacking central midfielders).

I am going to hunt you down and kill you! <grr>. I don't care how people try to dress it up. Our central midfield is distinctly average. Even the manager said it needs improved. And United have been patient in trying to sort the problem area out - too patient! Scholes has been past his best for years now, which is why he occupied a deeper and deeper role. His legs had gone. Now he's gone and still we haven't signed a CM. I'll be disappointed if that hasn't changed before the season starts.

Ferguson is now trumpeting Cleverley as a future England international. He mustn't have watched him at Wigan or for the England Under 21's in the summer if that's the case. He is better than Gibson but still not exactly looking like having top potential. We will be in all sorts of trouble on most away trips again next year with the current central midfield. The rest of the team will hopefully carry us through as they did last year but let's get one thing straight - the central midfield is more a hindrance than a help and if we retain the title, it will be a testament to the rest of the squad.

I really think Scholes could have gone on next season. In my eyes he was still our best central midfielder, most creative going forward and could change a game in a flash. Fletcher is first choice DM but Scholes in my view was a better option than Carrick, Anderson and Gibson. Hopefully this is the season where Anderson steps up because if we don't sign Sneijder I don't think anybody else is coming in.

I think a defensive midfielder would be more of a priority, especially with Fletcher's illness.

If no creative player is signed, I'd like Anderson to be given a chance further forward. I don't think he's ever got his head around having to play in a deep position.

I do think Adams would be a very useful squad player and last season was scholeseque at times in a very average side. Not sure Carrick would get up to much playing for Blackpool.
The workrate of the likes of Giggs, Park and to a degree Rooney has helped paper the cracks that a central midfielder should be a priority.
Not that I will question Sir Alex. i think its fair to say he knows what hes doing.

Charlie Adam may be able to hit a long pass but his work rate is nowhere near what SAF requires of a CM.
