It's similar in some ways to the Pompey situation. During my teenage years Pompey were at best an irrelevance, being several divisions below us. I couldn't understand where all the obvious animosity to us came from. In the end it all got rather dark and not at all good humoured. I can only hope that some Bournemouth fans don't lead us down that route. The problems caused might last for a generation, which would be a shame, when there was so much goodwill on our side, from most.
I do agree he has a test coming up, however regardless of results, I believe he will continue to act with class and dignity. He could fail over the next year and it won't change my opinion that he is a great coach/manager and one for the future; the immediate future.
Win tomorrow and we go from 10th to 7th, but assuming nothing. Done that before and underestimated Saints ability to cock things up. Let's just say we should win.
As much as I feel benevolent towards our seaside buddies, we need to win tomorrow to keep up, a 5 nil win would allow us to catch up with Spuds, in my dreams perhaps, I would settle for a routine victory!
My best mate is a Pompey fan (there it's out!). Our friendship was forged in the heat of common love for our clubs and bitter rivalry. As this was the 80s he really had all the work to do in that Saints were so much better for much of the time. I admire him for it. I don't think you could do this now, things are getting just too nasty. It's this that I'm picking up from Bournemouth fans thesedays, I live in Dorset after all. I think they seem to think we're all too arrogant and look down on them, silly really. I'm going for an arrogant 2-0 victory.
I lived in Bournemouth for several years, love the place. Have always had a soft spot for the cherries and always looked out for their results. I too hope that we have a healthy rivalry, bit of banter few chants and no more. I want b'mouth to be a success in the PL, tomorrow accepting of course.
Me too. Lived there/Christchurch for 5 years. Always look out for them. I went back down last weekend. Stayed in Poole but soent sometime in Bournemouth and Christchurch too. It's a lovely place.
I lived in parkstone Poole for a couple years near Ashley cross. Then I had a flat next to b'mouth gardens, happy times. Try to go back as often as I can.
No, it will continue after that. There's little danger of this club being in trouble these days. OK, I'd be quite disappointed, simply because we'd lost ground on our rivals, but really it's a case of, if we have to lose to some team, I'd rather it was them. Honestly. But we won't.
When I was growing up, and Bournemouth was still part of Hampshire, I always looked out for their and even Pompey's results and was happy enough if all three Hampshire teams won. Things were different then. The apparent "hatred" (?) that now exists between some fans, theirs and ours, now fuelled by Internet forums, leaves me shaking my head in despair. I've stopped using various forums owing to the unchecked trolling that was allowed by some very liberal moderators. Now, my feelings towards both neighbouring teams tends to be one of indifference, other than when we come up against one of them, like tomorrow. Also, because Bournemouth's results can now impact on our league position, I do now show some interest in them, but Pompey? I haven't even checked their result today.
Its a little known fact that many years ago Bournemouth were known as "the sea and squirrels" before they adopted the name cherries. They shortened the name and came to decide upon cherries because squirrels like them and if you put them in the sea they float.
http://www.theguardian.com/football...bournemouth-rivalry-south-coast-derby-history The Guardian's view of the rivalry. Mentions that Boruc hasn't trained this week because of a dietary issue???
The rivalry appears to be in the Bournemouth fans eyes only from what I can tell. In the same way we were fortunate when Saint Markus took a healthy interest in us as a club and that ultimately saved us/transformed the trajectory of our club, Bournemouth have had their own financial demons. It always strikes me that the fans have short memories on the massive financial mis management over the years and are quick to forget how many football fans dug deep several times over when they stared into the abyss. I remember sacrificing my hard earned money along with my Saints supporting friends when we took a Saints side to Dean Court-why.... For the greater good in football when all other investors looked the other way. They have been lucky with Max the Russian and I wish them well enough as long as they remember where they are coming from and why they're still around as a club. It will take time to be as good as us,
