I've never seen this before (just read about it in today's paper). http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/oct/30/george-best-football-as-never-before-matthew-nolan
Hard for younger ones to appreciate how big a star Best was. At a time when the highest paid players were getting paid £400 or £500 (the most Tommy Smith earned in a season was £25,000 and £15,000 of that was in bonuses when they won 3 trophies) Best was pulling in £5,000 a week with endorsements. You could buy a couple of E-type jags for that then, or a decent house. Talking of E-types, haven't often felt jealous but when I saw someone with his talent and looks stepping into an E-type with a Miss World did bring about more than a touch of envy. Talking of Miss Worlds, when Best went that only left Bruce Forsyth who had shagged two reigning Miss Worlds. Nice to shag you, to shag you nice...
I wonder if that enthralling extract is a misleading teaser for the rest of the film, as so often happens...
Saw Georgie Boy play on a couple of occasions and every time he received the ball, the hair on the back of my neck stood up and you could sense the crowd (for and against) hold its collective breath. In his heyday, he was truly magical and I have not experienced anything like the effect of his presence at a game, before or since. "RIP, King George the Best."
