Nowhere near and in fact not in the top 10. No1 in the age stakes is 'charles stokell' currently 83, followed by the oldest female' joannahatfield' aged 79.

I would imagine that she's got the full set.

    Native American Bear.
    Biker Bear.
    Cowboy Bear.
    Police Officer Bear.
    Military Man Bear.

And she's probably got the In The Navy limited edition extension pack.

Which came with Sailor Bear and Admiral Bear.

It's actually a roller skating elephant, not a bear as such Ern.

    I don't understand.

Elephants arn't allowed in the YMCA.

Not since that incident involving one with an oversized trunk.

No and no, not as far as I'm aware.

I don't play with it Bob, it's an elephant in a frock and roller skates FFS.

Good job Junior Junior went with her indoors to get it because no way would I have allowed it.

A guardsman bear stood rigidly to attention with a scowl on its face -Yes.

A big fat elephant lolloping about in a tutu-No.

Well, before I carry on, I'd like to make it clear that I'm a very interesting person.

The old (rotary) phone systems were based on sending a series of timed electrical pulses. External Interference, noisy soldered connections and many other causes meant that individual stray pulses were commonplace across the network. It was considered that using 111 would result in false calls, generated by minor network glitches, clicks and crackle. This is quite possibly the reason that the lettering system on many phones (to this day, I think) doesn't include 1 but I'm only guessing.

Using 999 was arguably over engineered as a way to avoid false (network generated) calls but is characteristic of the times when network engineers did things for their convenience rather than punters. However 9 was justified as easier to find on the dial than something mid dial as it was just one off the "0" and you could find it more reliably by pushing against the stop position to which it was close. This was considered to be helpful for the visually impaired or anyone in a smoke filled building. In any case, I believe, Hull Corporation Telephones uniquely (i.e. unlike the GPO) ignored the final "9" dialled so "99" would connect you to to the emergency services anywhere that really mattered.

000 would have been a poor choice as a single "0" was used for an Operator connection (before 999 services were introduced). Also, 0 was encoded as 10 pulses so although easy to dial, the network connection time was even longer that "9".

Sorry...watching "Silent WItness" with her indoors...if you think the above is boring, you should check out some of the meaningful atmospheric pauses I am having to endure.

Been there ,done that, got over it. just be careful what and how you eat in future. Bags of sympathy for you if it makes you feel better. Keep your bowels open and don't bake it and fart when you need to. In church or Chapel let it rattle. You must feel better now, mine was diagnosed in 1989 I'm 83 now so there's hope for you.

If you ever come to Australia 000 is our emergency number and 9 was used as an operator connection. Was here in Aus for 42 years before having to dial 000 and then again a couple of days later for 2 unrelated incidents. Lived for 26 years in the UK without any necessity to dial 999.

I also done that and got the t shirt, I was diagnosed 3 years ago after I had a colonoscopy then a barium enema, because I was bleeding out of my aft slush box. Good news was it wasn't the big C, but told that I had some diverticular problems, to be honest its not been a problem upto now, although I get a fair bit of pain if I eat to much spicy food in one sitting. Hope it dosent present too much of a problem for you after its all calmed down.

In step with you here charles. Mine was diagnosed in the early nineties and has never been a problem.

Was told years ago that a headstone somewhere in the UK has an inscription which has- " Always let your wind go free. I couldn't and it killeth me".(or similar)

    Where e'er ye be,
    Let your wind blo' free.
    In church or chapel,
    Let it rattle.

Pure poetry from one of our flatulent forefathers (or mothers?).
