I'm not being dismissive of the LC, but I don't see it as the benchmark for performance. True, in 2006 it was a bit of a springboard to success, but the 2nd place finish in the league that year was more of an indication of things to come imo. There were also plenty of seasons when SAF utterly dismissed the LC, even when we were struggling and not winning much. I remember 92, 06 and 10 for how close we got to the title, not the fact that we won the LC. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather win the LC than not win it, and don't want to turn into a negative side like Chelsea. But equally I don't want to turn into Liverpool or Spurs where the LC is seen as a great prize and makes up for years of under performance. Ultimately, come the end of the season, if we haven't challenged for the league or gotten a reasonable distance in the CL then the season will have been a failure, LC or not.
It was the league cup. How much sleep did you lose last night, rounded up to emphasise the devistation.
Finally. Can the rest of you stop pretending you give a **** that we got knocked out of it now please. It was bottom of the priority list, way, way down. And SAF didn't care about it. It a helped him decide who was being sold. A chance to assess the deadwood and bed in a few youngster. Anytime we ever got far, the first team played the semi finals and finals.
Amazing isnt it that when it suits, we are reminded not to compare the expectations for a new manager with that of Fergie's United. So it's surprising isolated examples are being used now. Ofcourse I'm happy to compare Van Gaal to Fergie all day long if we're opening up that can of worms For now though, the context is simple. Our style of football is slow, wasteful and lacks purpose. Play against: 1) a naive Everton defence and we look like world beaters. 2) a well organised defensive unit (whether that be City, Newcastle or Middlesborough and we look clueless up front. 3) a well organised defence with a decent attack like PSV or Arsenal and not only do we look slow, cumbersome, wasteful, lacking ideas, looking impotent up front, but as a result we invite pressure onto our defence and have our pants pulled down. The game against Middlesborough is just one more example of games against the other teams I've quoted above from the PL and the CL and demonstrates on the showing so far why we wont be anywhere near winning anything with this spoofer.
1. A conveniently niave Everton defence with one of the leagues most highly sought after defenders? 2. So teams we beat are only beaten because they were ****? 3. Any decent side will beat us? Familiar sounding.
This is your view and deserves to be respected. Like the arsenal match, I don't think we can draw a lot from that match. From the outset when I saw the team sheet, I said that we were not likely to go through the tie. Just my opinion. I just hope (and think) you are as wrong as you were with Martial PS: just worth pointing out that a difference of opinion and criticism of the manager is allowed here. On the RS board, people are so scared to even hint at any criticism of kloppyflop or even any doubt that he will bring the glory days back. Any such fan will be lynched, ridiculed, and hung out as an insurgent
I very rarely bother to continuously post about it Christian and tend to respect all opinions but when I hear phrases such as "panicking" or "pretending to give a fck" all I can see is a cheap way for an insecure fan to try and belittle a reasoned and imo pretty bloody obvious reason for LVG's failings. I dont include you in that at all btw, I can respect your reasoning, but I'm not going to let someone get away with spouting that other ****e.
@Treble you know I respect your opinion and enjoy your input at times but we disagree, strongly on some points. We agree on plenty of others too but let's be honest, that's what its about. How boring would it to be the Chelsea board? (If LvG was doing a Jose just now, I would be far less inclined to defend him ) But come on, be honest... You're not bothered about the league cup are you. Its disappointing to lose, always is but last night wasn't quite the monstrosity its been made out to be. Anyway, back to more important things this weekend. No doubt we will be disagreeing on a number of things
Scored 4 out of 9 against Arsenal, Everton, City. Scored 4 out of 9 against PSV, Wolfsburg, CSKA. Results and performances mirror the opposition in both competitions. Win one and lose one, in the the third competition. But apparently there's no correlation at all between any of these It's like closing your eyes, putting your hands over your ears and pretending none of it is true.
And sorry but the anti LvG stuff is anything but reasoned. The stuff Swarbs, Diego and Smith are posting is probably a balanced view. But the "were the ****test club ever and LvG is a rubbish manager" stuff is anything but reasoned
People were expecting fewer points than that though, from the league games anyway. CL is harder to judge, brand new team, may as well be our first year back in ages... So not exactly a disaster. Should have 6 really after the City game but 4 is about par. Looking at it overall, we've kept in touch and that was the most important thing.
You see thats the difference between you and me UIR. Just bcos someone disagrees with my views doesnt mean I think they're unreasonable. I consider Diego, Swarbs and Smith to be very reasoned. I could talk to them anytime and everytime precisely bcos they are reasoned. It's just twonks who use phrases like "we're the ****test club ever" which I've never used as a way to dismiss my view that I find unreasoned
You haven't directly but you've come close. Others have basically done so. You've certainly stated you want LvG to go now as well. I think its fair to say the 3 mentioned lean towards my viewpoint though. One thing that is certain is LvG has the fanbase split.
It's not so much the being knocked out, it's the manner and style of the performance. The football this United team play is negative and turgid. That's obvious to anyone who isn't totally blinkered. It's just **** to watch.
The team against Boro included 8 internationals. 3 more came off the bench. No idea what it cost to assemble but it was a lot! Why shouldn't they be expected to beat Boro at home? If not beat them at least put in a performance rather than trying to nick a result?
This. Even someone with half a brain can see this. Others, clearly not. But yeah, we're the ****test club ever and van Gaal is a rubbish manager and other things no one has said, ever.
Several categories of United fans and their views on the football being played: 1- Think the team is playing boring football and that this is unacceptable given the players at its disposal 2- Think the team is playing boring football but accept this in the short term as long as the team wins (important matches). 3- Think the team is playing boring football and accept this both short and longer term 4- Do not think that United play boring football. Or not really an issue as long as the team plays solid and wins. I suspect that Scholes comes in the first category. And Gary Neville comes in the 2nd (possibly even 3rd) And we will have to put up with the divergence of views and opinions on this board too
