To be fair mate, Karanka has them looking like a proper team now, so you can see why crowds are improving. They have a rep for being fair weather fans.

Agreed. On balance, Boro deserved their night.

Fergie had a sense of humour ..... something the likes of Mourinho lack.

Mourinho has never said anything funny in my recollection but just takes advantage because reporters have to watch what they say.

Yes they do look half decent now unfortunatley. They were slagging him off a month ago though when they dropped points 2 games in a row.

I think people tend to look at older managers with a lot of sentimentality.

In that respect, as in real life or on this board, I'll always look more fondly on anyone who makes me laugh.

Van Gaal couldn't make me laugh in a helium filled room full of photos of Adam Johnson taunting the Mags.

I can laugh at him but not with him.

He just kept calling them Queens Park Raisins in his post match interview... not funny now I've had to explain it.

I guess that counts as laughing at him mind.

Can't say I'm a Van Gaal fan, he's about as warm and interesting as an ice cube. I guess if he wants to win something it's time to spend another £230,000,000 on new players.

Yeah because he's the first to do that. <doh>

I think you're a top lad to be honest mate, but that's one of my pet hates people going on about spending to achieve success. We're self sufficient as well, which makes the criticism 100x worse for me.

Rodgers probably spent £300m and won **** all, probably a big chunk of that not money Liverpool have generated.

You lot spend outside of your earnings, win nowt.

    Villa spend big, win nowt.

Spurs spend huge money, win nowt.

Why can't we spend money to go for success?

Kind of got me thinking about past v present.

A difficult if not impossible one to answer.

Fergie. Jose and Wenger v Shankly. Busby and Paisley.

Which trio would fair the better if times were switched?

Could the trio from long ago handle todays prima donnas?

Could the modern trio handle the more robust game of long ago?

If you sat them all round a table the old fellas would destroy the likes of Mourinho.

Mourinho is a coward, like Pearson, who use the position of reporters to act the hard man.

I met Jock Stein once and, believe me, you'd have tied his shoelaces if he'd asked you.

The three I'd hang my hat on in any era, Fergie, Busby and Paisley.

    A fine trio.

Fergie would probably have been a major sucess in those days. Judging by how he built those teams at utd and bringing all those kids through.

Another. How would Clough fair in todays game?

He was the first one to take the piss out of reporters & chat show hosts who he knew couldn't answer back.

He'd fit in perfectly these days <ok>

I thought that might rile you but it wasn't my intention to do so at all so apologies.

I just don't like the modern way of throwing money around until something good happens, especially with the cartoonish transfer fees and players earning more in a month than some of us will make in a lifetime of hard graft.

I didn't like it when City did it, when Chelsea did it, when Liverpool, PSG, Real Madrid did it...as you say at least United have the income to justify it, I just find myself feeling increasingly disconnected from the modern game and the huge amounts being spent is a part of that.
