Former Sheffield United and Birmingham City midfielder Curtis Woodhouse likened Sunderland captain Lee Cattermole to Dick Turpin during the Tyne-Wear Derby on Sunday afternoon.

The outspoken ex-footballer, turned boxer, was especially critical of the former Wigan Athletic midfielder during the game between Sunderland and Newcastle United despite the Black Cats' 3-0 win.

Does Cattermole warrant the criticism given to him by Woodhouse?

Despite Cattermole-esque players becoming few and far between in the modern game, he has managed to carve a football career playing at the highest level in England.

He is a midfielder who is admired by his managers for getting his hands dirty and putting his body on the line, something many supporters appreciate in an age of diving primadonnas and overzealous refereeing.

Against Newcastle, despite not showcasing the most ability on the pitch, it could be argued that his presence and determination in the middle of the park gave other players the freedom needed to pick up all three points in the derby.

Under Allardyce, who is renowned for getting the best out of physical players, it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that Cattermole could go on to improve further in the Premier League and finally land himself an England call-up after years of knocking on the door.

His disciplinary record speaks volumes, given that he continues to play this season and beyond I think he will excel himself and become the record holder for red cards, he only needs two more and could have been very close to one yesterday but for some outstandingly lenient refereeing decisions.

To be fair I take it all back about him having his uses. He is ****ing terrible. I never realised how slow he was. His passing is atrocious, he literally just gives it away for fun. He had a shocker yesterday. M'Vila actually played ok but he was just overrun trying to sort out the mess that was their midfield. He played a few nice neat short passes and then someone would just lump it or Cattermole would pass it to us.

I'd quite like that M'Vila to replace Tiote. I think he'd fit right in with our midfield. If you got him and a ball player to replace Colback we'd have a canny midfield.

    Sissoko M'Vila Cabaye Gini

That would have been a canny diamond.

It was incredible and really made a mockery of their claims he gets booked on reputation. Either that or he let Robert finish on his face the night before.

It was the refs fault he was basically allowing him to and he did the right thing and used it to his advantage.
