Would have been great not to deny it and just say "would it really matter if it was?"

The other issue is this dipping of the toe can only end up putting the players off if they read things like this.

Luke's use of Twitter to pick up women might eliminate him

Being okay about other people being gay is a bit of a step from wanting others to think you were....especially if you had a partner/wife.

I'm trying to remember the comedy show where they used to use the line "...not that there's anything wrong with that."

    Seinfeld.

And yes, this remains a big deal. We're fast approaching the point where it will not be, but that day has yet to arrive. Progress is incremental, which is why we're talking about established footballers making this decision...if this was nothing, they would not have had to spend years hiding a significant portion of their identity. I cannot begin to imagine how difficult it would be as a public figure, having to segregate one's personal and private lives to that extent in a climate when everyone either knows your business or does their damnedest to find out.

Thank you and exactly right, you would suspect that it's virtually impossible for these men to form any meaningful relationships and yada yada yada

When they finally reveal themselves then lets not forget the most important law of them all... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-34613855

    Freedom of speech.

And with that law in mind, I guess Firmino

All I can say is that it will be light years before we get a Lesbian playing in the Premier! Knowing some of the Trolls they will have a field day but should be despised at all levels.

Have known many gays and have great respect for them all, for being brave enough to come out.
It's just sad that they have to make a conscious decision to do so, when it should be as accepted as readily as heterosexuality.

But, if I may be allowed to have a (warped) sense of humour, it has to be all the goal keepers, after all, they refuse to wear the same outfit as the rest of the team.

Excellent article that is, and far more interesting than some footballer's personal life.

People have the freedom to say stupid things when these players come out, sure. I have the freedom to express my opinion that the people saying stupid things are ignorant relics of a mercifully-ending era in which it was acceptable to hurl insults at people on the basis of elements of their being that they do not understand.

Nobody is saying it isn't a big deal, but it ought not be so. Society has to go a very long way before it allows people to feel free whatever sexual and philosophical leanings they may have. Society wants [it almost insists] us to be 'normal' in the fully rounded way. And it defines normality on a day to day basis.

From the person's perspective, it would be wonderful if that person was able to be unafraid and confident in whatever gender sexual preference they have. Until then, society will always make that person feel that it is a big deal.

I think Bertrand might be the England international in question, if it is, then shouts out to him.

I'd like to think that were it one of ours (and let's be honest, in a squad size of however many we have, including youth, the likelihood is that we have some gay players), our fans would be incredibly supportive.

Perhaps a bit naive of me, but imagine how great it would be if all the fears pro footballers had turned out to be completely unfounded.

Doesn't matter one jot who it is - that's just the human interest aspect. But someone of whom we're all aware is allegedly about to effect a positive seismic change on the face of football, so yes, other than a bit of forum discussion about it, that part actually matters. I guess one of their motivations in announcing it is to start the national conversation within the notoriously small-minded arena of football support, so we are actually doing this a service.

Plus, I want full credit to my fully-servicing, state of the art gaydar please if and when it is Danny Welbeck.
