The lad that started this "car vs power station" arguement wasn't exactly backing up his arguement with figures / assumptions, but you can't conclusively say he is right or wrong depending on the method of electrical generation, electrical usage of his chosen electric car, and the type of petrol car he is benchmarking this against (and how it is driven). If the energy came from anything but a renewable source (which the vast, vast majority in this country still does), then it is very likely that at this point in time the electrical car would NOT be 'saving the planet'. If, however, we go 50 years in the future and a much higher percentage of our energy is renewable or nuclear then yes the electric car is the way forward, certainly for local travel. What gets my goat though is that Stereo will shoot people down but not provide at least some reasoning if not some figures to support his case - yet we should just accept that he knows best. What do you actually know about the relative efficiencies of the different types of power generation we have in this country? Even just naming a few types of plant would give me some reassurance that you have some idea of how one might actually go about calculating which would be more efficient. And on the 'real men don't eat meat' thing. Give me a break. We are the ultimate hunter gatherers. The main basis for the development of modern man was our need to become better at the basics - food, shelter, and ****ing lol. Real men (i.e. sticking to our true genetic roots and instincts) are hunter gatherers. Men who are choosing to deny that we are supposed to be tearing strips of flesh off a bone, working with our hands, and ****ing as many women as we can are the ones who aren't 'real' men. All in my opinion of course. Which is no better or worse than anyone else's...

The person who brought up the car v power station point didn't provide a single fact to back up his claims, said he hated environmentalists and vegetarians with a vengeance then went on to say he wanted respect from vegetarians towards meat eaters before going on to repeat he hates vegetarians. So did you really expect me to take him seriously?
