Ha! I was careful not to imply that, as I know that hits a nerve with your lot. I'm not a WUM and don't particularly care, nor hold a theory on whether Shearer would have won you more titles.

Sorry i like you but shearer was actually world class and im not convinced rooney is at all.

Beckham yes, Scholes yes, cantona yes Rooney not for me. Just Englands only good striker since the likes if shearer.

Rooney wouldn't have got a game for england if the players i mentioned were around

Also imagine if all the players i listed played at man united in the same sides and time period.

Shearer would probably have scored hundreds more

Michael Owen was better for England than any of those strikers you mentioned and Rooney walked into the squad.

I've said Shearer was world class, but attempting to second guess what would have happened if Shearer went to United is pointless.

Like I say, I only said that about Rooney to prove a point to JPF, I wasn't attempting to say who was better.

I read that but does it add up? Shearer turned 30 on August 13th 2000 didn't he? Was he not already on 199? (He was 29 at Euro 2000) I think someone has added up their wikipedia wrong or I have got Alan wrong.

It is also worth noting that Shearer scored his in 371 games. Or if there are correct and he you do count 99-00, then 334 games compared to Rooney's 415. Not to quibble Rooney's output mind, its still a fantastic achievement either way. As was Shearers given the injuries he sustained in his career.

Unless of course they are being ridiculous and excluding his 23 First Division goals for Southampton? Effectively saying the world began with PL and Shearer's record starts at 22 <laugh>

I went for end of 2000 mate, as far as I can see that put Shearer on 296 career goals and Rooney on 303... yeah, you could argue Rooney's played more games, which is why I said he's done that from a number 10 role, each way you put a slant on it, you can make whichever player you fancy seem better.

I doubt Rooney will get past Shearer's 'retirement' tally though.

FWIW I gave Shearer all of his 00/01 goals (7) as I couldn't be arsed to find out which he'd scored in 2000 and which in 2001.

Ah completely different to the thing I read as that was a PL thing but as above ridiculous. I think it would be right with international goals included (303 Roo against 289 AS). Took him a lot more (545 against 676) but certainly has outscored him and you'd expect it would take him more with playing deeper roles.

Like I say mate, I was only drawing JPF's attention to the stat... he's probably not even bothered to be fair.

It's a tough league to score in regularly for any player, which is why I, as a biased MUFC fan, prefer Ronaldo to Messi.

Massively difficult call. Ronaldo offers you the power and physical perfection on top of all his skills/tricks/pace. Messi's low centre of balance and trickery is a beauty only the genius midgets can give you. I'd probably always go for the midgets to be fair, they just play a more beautiful game. I'd count Hagi, Maradona etc among my favourite players of all time.

Anyway its a wasted discussion when it comes to the best player of all time. Ditch all these silly opinions etc, bias on forwards. Franco Baresi is the greatest player of all time. Genius. <laugh> I will never agree with any other sentiment.

It's personal preference innit, my favourite player of all time is Paul Scholes. Nobody gets anywhere near him for me, because of the amount of times I've sat inside Old Trafford watching him play.

Ronaldo's explosiveness all day long for me though, over Messi's tax dodging hgh-helping performances. <ok>

No you're just not a tit. Ronaldo is better than Messi. Don't let the tits railroad you into this team player bullshit! Ronaldo is faster, stronger, can head the ball and actually jump, has more powerful shots and has all the tricks **** to boot. Most complete footballer ever.
