He didn't score a single goal for me in fantasy football this year. It will always rankle.

Different players. Cantona's all round game by far surpassed Shearer's but what Shearer specialised in was second to none. Daft to compare. But imagine Shearer with Cantona behind him? Wow!

It's not like Shearer only had one aspect to his game. I'd rather have had Shearer defending a corner than Cantona, and Shearer got almost no credit for his crossing ability but he was one of the best in the league when he drifted to the wing. Cantona more guile in creating something from nothing but both class players of course.

I never said Shearer only had one aspect to his game. Different players. Pointles comparison but together would have been a force.

Cantona was renowned for his goal line clearances. They just carried out their defensive duties differently as Cantona always took a post.

Just looked on http://www.worldfootball.net/alltime_goalgetter/eng-premier-league/tore/1/ to try and shove something up your arse and refute that lump of lard <cheers> but was more surprised to see that Andy Cole has only scored 1 penalty - surely that can't be right can it??

    ????

    Are you serious

Shearer has more premiership goals still despite not playing for the best sides over a 14 year period?

Also England wise there was fowler, Sheringham, cole, ferdinand and le tissier among others around in his career wanting caps.

    No argument im afraid mate.

Rooney is good and has done well but a million miles away from shearer.

England are **** and have been for many years

It's not an opinion mate, it's fact, Rooney aged 30 (almost) has outscored Alan Shearer at the same age. There's obviously other ways to look at it, the goal rate for example, will be in Shearer's favour, but like I said, Rooney is a number 10, so there'll be ways to make Rooney look better also.

If you think he was better then that's fair enough, he was probably better at scoring goals, but Rooney is better at winning trophies <ok>

It's all about opinions. But, Manchester United are better at winning trophies.

We'll never know, but I doubt Rooneys trophy haul would have been too impressive had he stayed at Everton.

Of course it wouldn't, but he chose to play for United. He hasn't been a passenger at United, he's come in and been pivotal to our success.

Shearer would have won more, of course, if your owners knew how to build a team, or if he come to United. I think his ego would have clashed with Fergie's ego and he'd have been sent packing after a few years like Ruud and Becks were but I agree with what you're saying.

I didn't want my comment to start a fresh debate, I just wanted to put a slant on it to help JPF put his assessment of our captain into context.

Shearer was a world class striker, I'd have loved him at United but it never happened and I can't fault him for wanting to play for his team.

I know you weren't trying to start a new debate and I don't doubt Rooneys impact at Manchester United (there's more than one 'United') has directly assisted in your continued success. It's just that Manchester United/Alex Ferguson developed the winning mentality and success has followed ever since.

It's hard to say about Shearer potentially clashing with Fergie. Might have happened, might not have. We'll never know.

What is without doubt, is Shearer definitely would have won more trophies at Manchester United.

I'd agree with that, but I wouldn't agree that he'd have won more trophies for Manchester United.
