Because of the fact that the rationale for not re-signing them then was in order to re-sign them over the course of the season, which we've now suggested we won't do.

You don't seem to have a grasp on reality. We have not suggested we wont sign players over the course of the season.

Steve Bruce said: "I would love to tie them down for two or three years. It is a difficult situation so we have got to try and wait until we know where we are in the New Year."

The New Year is nothing like the end of the season.

Thanks, my grasp on reality is fine. So we're going to sign players in the New Year, but that runs counter to your entire point that there's no indication that clubs re-sign players during the season. You're running around in circles.

Either clubs do re-sign players during the season, in which case how do we have any clearer an idea in the New Year than we do now; or they don't in which case I'm critical that we didn't sign players before the season started. What's so difficult to understand?

Where have I said that there's no indication that clubs resign players during the season?
I've already said that I don't think it will be much clearer in January about our promotion prospects but I wasn't pointing out what I would do I was pointing out what Steve Bruce had said the club would do.
I think what I have said is very clear and sensible yet you seem incapable of understanding anything. If I tell you what Steve Bruce has said it doesn't mean I am agreeing with the decision.

I think the club is in a difficult position. If they are unsure whether they can get out of this division then they may have to offer wages greater than the norm for this division if they want to keep the players. Without keeping the players they may not get out of the division. It's all very well to say we should risk it but it could cost the owners a lot of money. Obviously if we do get promoted the owners will get more if they sell the club.

Don't think anyone's said we should risk anything. Relegation clauses were inserted in case of relegation, promotion clauses should be inserted for a likewise scenario.

So if we offer a contract with Championship wages and Premier League wages why shouldn't the players prefer to join a Premier League club in January? Obviously they didnt choose to do so last summer but maybe it was something to do with the release clauses? Players could always wait until the summer and see what is on offer rather than committing now.

Maybe because then they'll feel wanted here. Not offering new deals when we're looking likely to finish in the play offs just suggests we don't rate players high enough to warrant keeping around in the PL.

If we offer new deals and they turn them down then we can sell in January.

Really don't understand how you're defending the club. We've renewed two contracts in about 4 years, apart from the auto-extensions based on appearances for guys like Harper.

Finishing in the play-offs is nowhere near a certainty to get promoted.

    Ok.

You're right, better to let half our list leave on frees again. Club's doing the right thing.

Why should they leave? We may get promoted and then we can offer them a competitive salary in the Premier League.

Because we won't rate them as good enough to keep on. There's always a rationale to not offering our players new contracts. I think we could have offered McShane, Rosenior and Quinn competitive salaries but they're at rivals in the C'ship because they felt pushed out the door here.
