Which is better in a footballer -

Someone with the natural talent but a lazy attitude

    OR

Someone who has worked hard to perfect his skills

Personally I would take the hard worker.

I'd go for the hard worker. It's when they have natural talent and work hard that you get the special players. I have a son who has the talent but it's a nightmare trying to get him to work hard.

I would also go for the hard worker who puts in 100%.

Natural talent? Is this genetic predisposition inbuilt in various children and when they play football they are exposed to these "natural talents"? I am intrigued and want to understand what you define as natural talent.

Being good at something without much training or experience. However probably all fooballers will have had this when they were young so you wont get such clear examples of the difference so the levels of natural talent were never so far away at the start hence why in football everybody picks nurture. You can probably find some "next big thing" players that never turned into anything because being talented but lazy simply does not work in football.

It is doubtless that some people are born with more natural talent to be a good player than others. This could be due to being blessed with physical gifts, naturally better co-ordination (the basis of great technique) or the ability to see what's going on around them and make quick decisions. All of these are talents and we most certainly are not all born equal in this respect. It's the same for any sport.

And in academia for that matter. I read a piece recently where an "expert" claimed that we are all born with the same intelligence but those who perform better in education are those who work harder and are more motivated. Hard work and motivation are obviously important and can make a big difference but having the ability to begin with is still very advantageous. There are people who could work extremely hard but just aren't very clever and to read this expert claiming that this isn't the case really surprised me. He was probably paid a handy sum of money for this "groundbreaking" revelation too.

Well who ever said that was talking through their backside. I have met countless people who have achieved a lot of academic success by doing the bare minimum work. There are many people who naturally pick things up very easily and then there are people like me who have to work twice as hard to be half as successful.

I agree. Although that said, most people who work hard and develop a good work ethic, as well as working smart, will be able to outdo people with superior intellect but a worse work ethic and less common sense imo.

Could this "expert" be talking about synaptic connections in the brain? I have forgotten the age but at a certain critical period as a child we are forming these connections between our neurons. The connections are important because they influence our intellectual capacity, memory, problem solving, and language. These connections are mostly made in early childhood. Therefore, Chica it is possible to say that, you work much harder because you never formed as many connections in the critical period, whilst those other children did. This explains why some people at a older age understand things much better. This is simply because they formed more synaptic connections in the critical period.

If this is the case, there will still be some who will develop these connections more naturally and to a higher standard than others, so the expert is still talking rubbish in terms of equality of ability. Tbh, it's probably just one of these stories that they trawled out to make everyone feel equal, and that hard work will always triumph in the end (not true), a feel good story passed off as fact.

Merry, there is no such thing as equality. I don't believe in equality but that is a different debate. However, if you do have child then make sure you help them exercise there brains as it is a muscle. They need as many synaptic connections as possible. This can be done with various cognitive tasks.

No I am not saying anything like that. I am like you and have to work hard for my grades but that is life I guess. I am guessing you get good grades but you need to put in that extra effort to do so. It is no bad thing. Shows you have determination to be successful which in itself is a skill. Not everyone is motivated and from my experience I know a lot of people who are naturally clever, not super clever but because of their lack of motivation they don't do well. However, very clever people will always do well as they are usually motivated as well or they simply pick up things at a speed which you and I simply can't do.

I think it's quite stimulating acually. I can feel my synaptic connections blossoming with every post :)

Back to the original post, I would prefer the worker, provided that they had enough talent to do a job for the team. Tbh, there isn't a single player who is playing at the highest level who hasn't had to work hard in addition to their talent to get there. Some may work that little bit harder but they have all had to make a lot of sacrifices to play at that level.

We are relating synaptic connections to enhanced technical ability. E.g Cognitive skills at a high level could influence a players ability to read the game much better than another player.
