FC Barcelona have been fined 40,000 euros by that wonderful body of high values (UEFA) for allowing their supporters to fly the Catalan Independence flag at their home match against Bayer Leverkusen. I can understand someone displaying a banner that is homophobic, racist or sexist as offensive but who is going to be offended by the flying of this particular flag apart from the PP Government in Madrid? So I suppose you better be careful as to the flags on display. The club could be fined if someone enters the ground flying the Basque Nationalist flag (sympathies with ETA). Could Celtic be in trouble for allowing their supporters to display the Irish Republic's flag? Meanwhile Chelsea got away scot free for the abuse their fans gave to people in Paris.
Didn't Pique carry a Catalan flag onto the pitch when Barcelona won the CL? Were the club fined for that?
There's the Catalan flag which is yellow and red horizontal bands associated with the region, then there is the flag of Catalan Nationalists which is similar but on the left hand side there is a purple star. As such this has political overtones and is not allowed under UEFA rules. So a club gets fined more for its fans making a political statement than for giving racist abuse. Wonder if they will fine Chelsea should there fans indulge in "Battle of Britain" songs?
It is ironic that Celtic also have a close affiliation with an Israeli club, one of the Maccabi's I think, and also St Pauli (a club with lots of left wing support and are very open about their politics on the terraces)
So flood the Kop with loads of Scots and Welsh flags. After all your finest players in the 70s and 80s were predominantly Celts. Someone correct me, but in your 1986 FA final side there wasn't one Englishman in the Liverpool team?
Also Ironic that The Rangers(Sevco)fans fly Union Jack's more so than Scottish Saltire's, they even started flying Israeli flags once Celtic supporters showed their solidarity with Palestine.
