i just had a trawl through one section of my 33s and noted labels. these already mentioned: boots, hmv, virgin haven't seen these mentioned, but wasn't reading all that closely: comet, browns, littlewoods, our price, whsmith also bostocks??? in leeds, merrion centre.
Yeah, but nearer Spring Bank. We were at no.21 - there was Balmes cobblers at 19 and a bike shop at 23. Later on there was another record shop - BOFS - run by a mate of mine, but it was further up near Tutty's.
That's where I got most of my records, great value. Most of my "new" records were bought at the Crescent Library in Hessle - Colin, who ran the shop, was getting on a bit and almost blind but he was very knowledgeable about the record industry.
My mum and dad bought me my first record player (a Fidelity) and included my first records - Heartbeat (a Buddy Holly EP), Dreamin (Johnny Burnett), Lucille (Everly Brothers), something by Bobby Vee (can't remembr the A side but B side was Stayin' In) and A DICKIE VALENTINE LP.
The place in the railway station , think it supplied music for the PA at BP , and also went to the big shop under the City Hall which I think was Sydney Scarborough .
I bought a few bits from Disc Discovery the other week. Owner is a big City fan. Was thinking of having a look in E & M soon as well, never been in before. Remember Andy's Records?
Yep. And I use their alphabetic rack-sorting way of being able to find my records. E.g. the Band, before the Beach Boys, before Beatles, before Bob Dylan. Ignore 'the' (except in the case of The The).
i adopted that method too. andy's was initially a local concern somewhere (cambridge?) before going national and failing.
thanks, didn't think of looking on there. i'm pretty sure i got to the cambridge one. i may have heard of them via ads in music mags. i used to spend half my life in record shops but these days record shops don't seem to have records or even cds in them. there is a southern relation of fopp i enjoy rare visits to (hoping to get to one of them on friday), but otherwise the evil amazon feeds my habit. i need to buy music in a format i can touch, whether i consume it that way or not. the solid stuff will leave my ownership after my heart stops and not before.
there's a cd shop in town (can't remember where now - prospect centre?) - more or less opposite richer sounds. god, it's horrible. soulless. puts me in mind of a mortuary. it looks like it's set up to sell tat and it treats the stock and the customers like tat. i have to have a shower and a bath and half an hour of sand blasting to feel clean again after going in it.
I didn't know this lot were still on the go. I was in the shop once (bought Everly Brothers' 23 Golden Greats and Elvis's Sun Sessions - on vinyl) in the mid-70s. http://www.cobrecords.com/
The only one you could be on about is That's Entertainment, which moved out months ago. I didn't mind going in there, but more for DVDs than anything else. If you're going to buy records from a franchise store, the only one that makes sense is HMV, though that is a tad pricey.
Craig is a massive City fan. I also purchased many records from him, also from Syds and Debenhams ( guy who ran the record dept looked like Robert Smith and would order anything they didn't stock)
yes, that's the one. i thought it had the word entertainment in its name, but couldn't dredge up a whole name. glad it's gone. i'm rubbish at dvds. makes me think my tastes are at odds with the the rest of the world. very little interest in films and even less interest in watching a film twice. i have the beatles anthology on vhs and dvd and haven't watched it through yet.
