Is it not to do with the position of the keeper? Like once the last defender (Ritchie) is past the keeper, the defensive line then becomes the last defender in front of the keeper..? Then again I could be WAY off..
You're close. Contrary to popliar belief you actually have to be in front of the last two players to be onside, including the goalkeeper. (It doesn't have to be da goalkeeper but he counts as one of the two).
Even if a defender is beyond the goalline, he still counts for offside purposes. So Sterling was onside.
