They are maybe worried that the gritting budget will eat into the regeneration budget as well as other logistical problems a harsh winter would cause

I absolutely love winter and the snow - bring it on. I'd better get my winter wheels ready :)

Despite the best efforts of the buskers, there is going to be no way of avoiding noise and disruption in the city centre over the next 15 months or so.

A giant suction machine will soon be deployed on the streets to remove the sand and gravel used as foundation material in the last major pedestrianisation programme in the area more than 20 years ago.

The machine has never been used in the UK before and will dramatically speed up a process normally carried out by hand.

At least, that is the theory.

The main worry appears to be the long-term weather forecast.

"I will admit to a degree of nervousness about that," said Councillor Martin Mancey, cabinet portfolio for public infrastructure.

"We hope to get this first phase completed by 2017, but obviously there are risks and the weather is one of those risks.

"If we get an Arctic winter with three months of snow, then there won't be a lot of digging going on but we're keeping our fingers crossed."

Speaking of conkers (again loads this year).....the same "country forecasters" using the signs of nature to predict the winter are those who claim conkers deter spiders in the home.....yet ignore all the spiders & webs in the local horse chestnut trees......

It'd be more worrying if they weren't looking at potential problems before they arise.

You can't blame them for being realistic & honest !! The scenario mentioned would certainly put work back weeks/months

Maybe you're supposed to put the conkers on a tree outside to draw the spiders out from your house.

Awarded city of culture in Nov 2013. First bit of work started this week just before winter. Planner should be shot. This should have started months ago in spring.

You are supposed to put them in the corners of your rooms to deter spiders.......old wives tale which is thoroughly WRONG

They would have had more daylight hours and not disputed the Xmas trading as much. Clocks change soon even less hours to work.

Our country seems to grind to a halt for at least a few days every year when there's a small amount of snow, so if we're getting a particularly bad year, expect chaos.

But joy for the energy companies.

There is a difference between being awarded & the arranging the finances (public & private) to complete the works

Totally agree. The city is going to look like a huge building site.

I completely agree but this portion of ripping the streets up and re pedestrianisation is costing just 25m and from the councils coffers. Even starting this spring would have given them 18 months to organise

What a ray of sunshine. Snowing on the parade sounds better than raining on it to me. <laugh>

Anyway, weather puns. Come on, it should be a breeze.
