Saudi Arabia's laws are clearly brutal, oppressive, and not something I approve of. However if you go to SA and make homemade alcohol despite it being illegal and knowing how harsh the punnishment is you're asking for trouble. I don't know the details of the case... This thread made me Google "Britain Saudi Lashing" and I found a story about Cameron trying to get him off. This sort of thing happens every few years. A decade ago it was that yank who got caned in Singapore. I don't want to sound callous but... You know what you're getting into when you go overseas to one of these countries and break the law. I feel more sorry for the domestics who have no choice than I do for Westerners who go there by choice and still break the law. Obviously in the case of your mate, if he really was innocent that's terrible and much worse.
I don't understand why people think the punishments are harsh. I bet their crime rate isn't a patch on ours as a result. Simple solution, don't commit the crime if you're not prepared to do the time (or be punished / killed in most instances here)
See your point and follow your logic, but for instance if your child in a few years took a sweet from a shop and out of character never paid for it would you be happy for them to have a hand chopped off in public just to teach him/her a lesson? Of course you wouldn't, its not the fact those that break the law get punished its the barbàric severity of punishments for lesser crimes. Milk is correct though, you know the score before you get there so as hard as it might be to not have a bevvy don't do it, better still sit in your local and have a few pints instead.
Obviously their punishments are too strong, my point was they have lower crime rate because of the punishment. If we adopted a similar approach (obviously not to the extent of removing limbs for minor offences) then crimes wouldn't be as high. Do you really think someone would commit murder, pheadaphilia or rape if they believed they would suffer a long and painful death as a result?

Sadly yes, street justice for those convicted of crimes against kids and the chance of being sliced up by other prisoners in jail doesn't seem to scare them, I think they like their perversion so much they don't care about the circumstances until its to late.

If someone is willing to spend life in jail they're willing to die. Harsher punnishments deter to an extent but I think you hit a point in diminshing returns when making sentences harsher. Murderers don't expect to be caught (or murder in heat of passion without rationalizing it). The punnishment is already harsh enough to prevent 99 out of 100 would be murderers. Barbarically kill murderers and the murder rate wouldn't drop much.
