Man U play the Seattle Sounders tomorrow night. Whats interesting is that its expected to be attended by a crowd of 66,000! Sign that soccer in the States is just waiting to take off. Won't be attending though since its four hours away and the tickets are 60 pounds a pop. Make the 9 quid for Ferriby tonight look good value! Know which one I would rather watch, and it would not be the game where I could see bags of peanuts being thrown to willing buyers.
The Flounders are by far & away the best supported team in the MLS (35000+ attendances). The stadium holds more but sections are shut off for the football. the ones that are open, they fill. What is telling is that they get so many more for a meaningless exhibition game compared to the league games.
It's been "waiting" to take off here in the US for the last ten years. It will eventually. It won't be tomorrow but it's great to see a friendly drawing that many. Seattle and Portland have the best MLS support thanks to a rivalry that goes back to the 60's and 70's so not a huge shock they sold that many seats but they sold 60K+ in Boston last week, too. We're getting there.
got the fusion blue shirt myself, a classic IMO.. whatever happened to the Tampa Bay Rowdies and the NY Cosmos.. I remember US soccer in the 70sn Rodney Marsh, Pele.. it's been "taking off" for 30 odd years... if Becks can't do it no-one can... apart from Deano.. aghermmm..
Everyone cared about Becks for three or four weeks. After his first appearance, the novelty was done. Shame, really. He's been in good form the last few weeks and actually seems to be putting forth an effort. They're trying to bring the Cosmos back as NYC's second MLS franchise. They even signed Eric Cantona as their director of football, even though they don't have a team yet. Weird. Tampa has a franchise in the NASL so I suppose they draw a couple hundred fans to games, maybe.
