For those canaries of a certain upper(ish) age range, here's a multiple choice quiz of ex city pubs. I got 8/10. Won't take long for the first full house, I'm sure! http://www.edp24.co.uk/features/photo_quiz_can_you_identify_these_former_norwich_pubs_1_4265572
Beer is definitely always a valid topic! I'd love to think it was educated guesswork to even get 5 but I really only knew 2! Bah!
9/10 for me, but I spent my childhood with my Dad telling me the history of all the old pubs in Norwich. Dad only ever gave directions in relation to pubs.
Sad to know that two of my ex-regular haunts on match day have gone - Clarence Harbour and Ferry Boat
5. The Ferry Boat Inn was one my Pa favoured and I have fond memories of my pineapple juice and lemonade as a nipper. I left Norwich in '92 as an 18 year old, so many of these pubs are unfamiliar to me as they were probably beyond staggering distance of home.
I used the Ferry Boat pre and post match for ages when it was up and running. I even saw the EUFA cup match Bayern Munich 1 - 2 Norwich City in there. Big screen biiiiigggg atmosphere

At the risk of an all-out-beer-focused war, we should go through this list and tally the number of 'Golds' won by Norfolk and Suffolk breweries. Some of them already specify the county of the brewery, but not all of them. http://www.camra.org.uk/champion-beer-of-britain
I'm going to do it. I'm going to start working through the list and tallying it up. Goodness knows when I'll be done, but I will post when I'm finished! EDIT: I've accounted for 2010 - 2015 so far. It's very close. I'll do the rest later.
I am not prejudiced - I will happily drink Broadside or Gun Hill despite their being brewed the wrong side of the border. That's the sort of fair minded bloke I am. Good luck with your comparative beer analysis JK. Hope you have a bit of free time and should Norfolk come out on top the ability to call upon an independent arbiter to verify your results!
So it didn't take as long as I thought. I'm not sure I want to post the results.... EDIT: All I'll say is, Woodforde's has won more Supreme Champion Gold Awards than Adnams
7/10 and the ferry boat was a wonderful pub but sad to say the landlord is the man that murdered 5 women in ipswich http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/former_..._murders_to_be_turned_into_a_musical_1_785879
When I used to use the Ferry Boat, a lovely couple called Don and Pat ran it. They previously ran the Golden Star on Duke St (?) and after the Ferry, took on the Champion, on St Stevens roundabout. I knew nothing about prostitute murders, etc.
Now then. To flesh out my 'findings' a bit more on here: Every year, there are several categories of award (e.g. Best Bitter/Best Specialty Beer etc. etc.), within which beers are awarded either Gold, Silver, or Bronze. I assigned a points system where: Gold = 3 points Silver = 2 points Bronze = 1 point The 'main' category is 'Supreme Champion'. This is (obviously) the overall best beer for that year. As I said in my previous post, Woodforde's of Norfolk has won the Gold twice, whereas Adnams has only won it once. For this category only, I assigned a points system of: Gold = 10 points Silver = 5 points Bronze = 3 points On overall points, sadly, since the earliest records in 1978 up until 2015, Suffolk breweries have outscored Norfolk breweries by 91 points to 59. HOWEVER, Norfolk can be proud to say that Woodforde's has brewed two beers (Wherry and Norfolk Nog) that have won the overall best beer. Adnams won overall just once with its 'Extra'. Mauldons of Suffolk also won it just once with its 'Black Adder'. One of my conclusions from this would be that the 'best brewery' in Norfolk and Suffolk is Woodforde's!
