    Jesus has got loads.

To me, it's no worse than going round taking bloody selfies everywhere.
Travel to some really good places and take photos of your gob ruining them.

Listen, let's assume he said something similar or close enough to the quote. We all salivated over Klopp talking about "not carrying history in a backpack" and "its starts here, now" etc.

To me it sounds like a similar thought. As a manager you can't worry about what the legends did if you are going to do the job successfully here and now.

Was BR trying to be matey off the record, was he a bit full of himself at that point? Probably. The wording quoted just doesn't sound like BR though. And with such a sentence, the exact wording would be quite important to the context.

As G said. He's gone. And gone for more glaring errors than an off the cuff remark made "off the record".

When the dust settles he'll be remembered as the guy that gave us an exciting season and no more. So whether he gives a **** about our legendary managers or not doesn't matter because his name's never going to be said among them is it? And for those who believe he's this nasty egomaniac then you should believe the idea that he won't really be remembered in those terms will hurt him much more than anything else.

Why are people bothering to pay attention to a guy who doesn't mind it being known he made public an off the record comment?

    Alternative theory:

You make a list of candidates, meet them one by one in alphabetical order, stop when you find the right guy

Firstly, why is that sentence damaging to his reputation? If it's true it's merely him saying he didn't care about what went before him, as it's irrelevant to his own task. Only someone being precious about LFC's history would deem that to be derogatory, and therefore he'd never be able to claim that it did significant damage to his reputation, that it deserved recompense.

Secondly, he'd have to prove it wasn't true and if there was only the 2 of them present then that'd be virtually impossible (from either side)

You mean the cosy kopite bullshit version - Ok mate <ok>

Martinez has stated publicly in 2013 that he knocked it back as he felt it wasn't the right move for him

  9. Read the second sentence, you know, the one IMMEDIATELY after the one you highlighted <doh>

Proving it would prove to be difficult though, I'll give you that. However, nor was it me that suggest he would sue the guy.

Happens all the time. Interviewees having banter with the interviewer gets reported, they say it never happened. All he said was 'is the mic on?' the reporter says 'no' - doesn't make the comment 'off the record' - just means there's no voice recording. Interviewer has a right to print it/air it if not specifically told 'off the record ....blah... blah ' Simple really if you're with a journalist/film maker and you don't want to read it or see it, don't say it.

Alyson Rudd from The Times recently said that Rodgers spoke a lot off the record, more than other managers - in particular his criticism of FSG and recruitment policy.

Re. the comments about icons, it wouldn't surprise me given his arrogance.

'Off the record' is a specific thing. People speaking once the cameras/recorders stop rolling are not 'off the record' - they are just running their mouths thinking it's not going to get out. Unless they specifically say it's off the record then they know everything they say is up for grabs.

Rodgers got caught all the time in interviews spouting off unguardedly, right from his very first one when he virtually said 'make me an offer and Carroll's yours'. I stopped watching open-mouthed after that because I was waiting for the clanger. Remember when he said any player will be sold if the price is right. He needed lessons on how to handle the media which I don't think he got. He wasn't used to the intense media spotlight in Liverpool after coming from Swansea and said far too much, far too often - we've all commented on it in the past, so thinking about what he said when he knew the cameras were rolling, I can only imagine what he would say when they weren't.

Why would Bennett lie? I admit I've never heard of him before today but I've looked up what he's done, reports and documentaries he's made and listened to a few minutes of what he says and he comes across as genuine enough with no axe to grind. I don't blindly believe media stuff around the peripheries of football, most is far fetched, but if this was about any other football person, I would still think there must be an element of truth in it based on the fellas reporting history and it doesn't appear to be gutter press.

Then he'd be a fool, given the last sentence of your post that I quoted.
To a certain extent, I'm playing Devil's Advocate here, jb. We're all quick to dismiss sports journalists as opportunist ****-stirrers saying anything to gain attention, sell stuff and further their own careers, and we cast doubt on anything they say when it's something we don't like- but we don't apply that level of doubt and scrutiny to something if it confirms our own suspicions or prejudices.

I have no idea if it's true, but I'm not prepared to jump all over somebody, on someone else's say so. As you yourself pointed out, Rodgers might have meant something like " what happened here before doesn't matter- it's what I do now that counts"- who knows?
Equally, he might be an arrogant self-absorbed individual more concerned with his own success than the club's, but at the time they were one and the same thing.
Most people in that type of job have a bit of an ego, it isn't always a bad thing professionally.
And I don't think we should be too offended that others don't have the same sentimental attachment to our club as we do.
