Because an apostrophe can indicate a missing letter, so it's means it is. Saves confusion.

Those are possessives so don't require an apostrophe to indicate it.

the context would sort it out. saying bert's an idiot and bert's brother is an idiot don't cause confusion.

You only have to read any forums to see how much confusion is caused by its and it's. A lot of people seem to play safe and stick an apostrophe on any word ending in an s. Wouldn't be surprised to see a reference to Leed's United.

What rules of English are at work in the pronunciation of Elloughton and Brough that stop them being pronounced Elluffton and Brow?

It's like ghoti could be pronounced FISH, if you follow why enough, station and women are pronounced as they are.

i know, i've read lots of them. if the apostrophed version was acceptable for both, there'd be no issue. the pronouns and related words are leftovers from when english words declined, whenever that was.

If you want to to clear the room at a party or make room at a crowded bar you could always regale them with the story of why Alec Douglas Home's surname was pronounced Hume and not Home.

Why would anyone actually use automatic autocorrect anyway? I can't speak for the iPhone but it's very easy to disable on Android and I speel far betur than the spelchequer output.
