It's called the Phoenix High School now mate ... http://www.phoenixhighschool.org/discover-phoenix.html They had to re-name ( re-brand ) it as when I left it in 1982 it was officially the worst school in Britain. For the record Jimbo see Tramore's post above. It's pretty much the same for me but I started there as Tramore left. As I recall we had to play rugby for the first two years and I played in the backs. No 14. Our year wasn't as successful as Tramore's though. I do remember when I was thirteen years old and we had to go to Brixton to play Tulse Hill away. We came out of the changing room and were confronted with this bunch of African/Caribbean kids who had beards and were twice the size of us. We got hammered. When we had the option I played football and scored a 40 yard wonder goal at Warren Farm. It's still the topic of conversation to this day. I also took a hat-trick of wickets in a maiden over in cricket at the same place. I also took up cycling where we would toodle off to Paddington Rec velodrome once a week. Good times.
This is true I know the school as Phoenix school and true again , if u was expelled from my school it was likely you ended up there ...... My school Gunnersbury , we had some epic battles with the following ' Latimer school , London oratory, Cardinal Vaughan, St benedicts, jeeeeeeez lads those where the days ...... If we managed to get through them which we usually did as they wee all pretty posh and played by the rules , our dirty tactics sometimes won the day(we'll always ,,, we would have to get past Chiswick school boys , Acton Town school and sometimes twyford school but they where usually to busy smoking green on Ealing Common )))) Bahhhh those were the days
I went to the London oratory 81 to 86 Played in the front row No football played at all I hated playing rugby but you only had two choices Rugby or rugby Oh and just to add we were not all posh
Meeting up with my son who lives in Putney and then off to Twickers. We'll enjoy whatever. On the one hand, the pressure is off as we've managed to get out of the pool, but on the other, beating the Aussies would seem to open up the route to the semis or even final itself. Defeat would mean facing the Boks with the winner facing the All Blacks in the semi-final If the Aussies play as they did last Saturday, can't see us winning. But........
I went to Northolt High 81-85, bit of rugby for first year, but it was mainly focused on football...remember playing against the Cardinal schools, who appeared to be much more concentrated on the rugby than we were.....we got a new sports teacher who was Welsh and he was apopletic about our indifference and lack of skill at rugby, so he tried to get us out on the rugby pitch every sports session, but it never took off!! There were a couple of boys who went off to some of the football academies, but don't remember anyone going to QPR
Aussies play Wales overnight and hoping for a continuation of their win rate ......... having won the past 10 meetings.
Jeez, small world Nines, I used to go to Tulse Hill School in the 60s and my 'house' was 'Wren House'. Amazingly I can clearly remember all 8 houses from the 60s, Blake, Brunel, Dickens, Faraday, Temple, Turner, Webb and Wren. Yet I can't remember three items on a shopping list... We played against Christopher Wren and several other schools from north of the river, Latimer Upper, Quintin Kynaston and others. I don't think there's anything like as much competition these days. Back then most of those schools would have had 2,000+ pupils... I also did cycling back then and had a fixed wheel track bike I used at Herne Hill velodrome which also had an athletics track as well...
Herne Hill velodrome in Burbage Road? I know it well. My mate's dad used to run a cycling team there and coached the young Bradley Wiggins. It's also the only existing venue from the 1948 London Olympics. We had four houses at Christopher Wren. I was in Newton ( Yellow ) but there was also Dryden ( Green ) Clarendon ( Red ) and Gibbon ( blue.) I reckon Tramore was a Gibbon.
In grammar school I played both sports but was not quite good enough for the football team, so played second row on the rugby team - that's me on extreme left of the front row wearing the older style shirt. In one of my early practice sessions I recall when I laid my first proper committed tackle on one of our best players, it felt really good, and he congratulated me too on making a great tackle! please log in to view this image
Amazing game at St James' Park, Samoans running at Scotland like nutters, 3 tries in 4 minutes......15-10 Samoa after 15 minutes. Reminds me of something I heard on the radio this morning. Of course we all want Wales toqualify for the Euro Championships, but at the same time it would be hilarious if they didn't. Likewise Scotland and the quarters here. Scotland being sucked into a giant Sevens match here.
That first half was incredible, out and out attacking rugby.29-26 to Scotland with 20 mins remaining,it's right in the melting pot.If Scotland lose,Japan will qualify for the quarters if they beat the U.S.A.!
I think you've got it pal,if they can stop giving away stupid penalties!Still think Somoa have 1 more try in them.
If they're within a score going into the last five minutes you just have to fancy Scotland to bottle it.
