It's not about "everybody" but a few. When the mores of a society are gradually and inexorably lowered that creates more on the bottom who are more likely to commit crimes. The knee-jerk reaction among American and European liberals is to blame the guns. That's too easy. The USA has always had a high proportion of gun ownership, so the problem is cultural. American popular culture has been decaying for some time (you see the crap we export). There is more selfism and less respect for human life, and this is true of all of the west, not just the USA. This must be reversed..

I think the native Americans may just prefer things not to good back too far when trying to revert back to old fashioned values.

As is usual in things like this, there's a minority who spoils it for the rest. It only takes a couple of nutters to do something & the whole world is screaming about the whole country is loony!
It's the same as people saying you shouldn't go to this area of that area in some Cities in England, the pub thread from yesterday shows that!
Anyone remember the 2 idiots who got high & we're listening to Judas Priest backwards & heard them say "do it," so they shot themselves! Really who buys an album & plays it backwards? If you hear the words "do it," is the first thing you think of killing yourself? If that was the case then how come Nike haven't been in court yet?
Same with movies, re-enacting a violent movie when your a kid is one thing, because they shouldn't be watching said violent movie, but as an adult, they really are a whole picnic short of a picnic!
Now if these nutters just did themselves in, it would be much better, but they have to take others with them!

In the 9 months to October this year there have been 294 mass shootings in the US. (Defined as 4 or more people killed or injured) and almost 10,000 deaths and 20,000 injuries as a result of gun incidents.

"The attacks came as President Barack Obama visited families of victims of a college shooting in Oregon.

On arriving in Oregon, he was jeered by gun-rights activists who oppose calls he made for tougher gun laws after nine people were killed at Umpqua Community College, Roseburg, last week."

    Those people are ****ing ****s.

Aye, you need a strong constitution to be able to stomach most of their arguments.

Why can't these gun nuts do something useful and wipe out the Westboro Baptist Church or something?

Did anyone see the comments made by Republican Presidential hopeful Ben Carson earlier this week?

They might be some of the most incredibly ignorant and downright stupid things I've ever read.

    Going off half cocked?

Texas students are planning to hang sex toys from their bags in protest at a law allowing people to carry concealed weapons on university campuses.

"The State of Texas has decided that it is not at all obnoxious to allow deadly concealed weapons in classrooms, however it DOES have strict rules about free sexual expression, to protect your innocence," wrote Ms Jin, a student at the University of Texas at Austin.

"You would receive a citation for taking a DILDO to class before you would get in trouble for taking a gun to class. Heaven forbid the penis," she added.

I took this as a questioning observation, rather than a statement of your belief in censorship, which seems to be how some have choose to read it and why some have decided to ridicule you.

I also believe you have a point, violence does influence further violence, in whatever form - but not across everyone; but you didn't say that, did you. Violent films and games must have some form of impact on some folks actions, but how widespread that is must be another question.

I have seen mention of various forms of madness being the trigger (sic) for the use of firearms and I would think that is correct, but I believe it is not the whole story. These crimes that so shock most aspects of society are not the acts of regimes or bodies that can be viewed as potentially lethal because of their stated beliefs, they are the acts of quiet, mostly lonesome individuals whose move to mass murder is gradual and influenced by some event or other in their life (abuse, infidelity, lust, hate, etc).

I think there are levels of violence and pornography that do corrupt those that might be vulnerable to it (they might not believe they are) - those people might not be vulnerable today, but something might happen in their life and social attitude that means they look for guidance from a dark moral compass. I think your point is valid to the limits you expressed it.

Of course, a part of the answer to their problem is gun control, whether their society likes that or not, that is or should be a no-brainer - but it isn't for American society (and commerce) is it? Social media, entertainment (TV, movies, theatre, porn, etc.) all play their part, they are are an influence, not for everyone, but sometimes for the vulnerable that might then become the aggressors. Put explicitly portrayed violence together with easily obtained firearms and then add a reason for action (not a big factor in some cases) and you have these regular shootings.

Should guns be controlled better in the USA - yes.

Should films be better controlled everywhere (content is becoming more and more explicit on the TV screen) - yes, in my opinion, but you didn't say that, did you?

When I was in America on holiday. I was struck by a moment of panic that any one of these people around me could be carrying a fire arm but then I had another frozen key lime colada, the panic passed, and I carried on admiring a stunner in the pool who was carrying a pair of bazookas.

I'm only focusing on this bit because this would be classed as censorship, dictatorship. You might be right, but I doubt it, what's to say that the news itself isn't to blame & all these reality programmes? Why? Because the news & reality programmes all give these people their little bit of fame, then in a flash they're gone, onto the next loon who shoots up the next school, or has a boring conversation about nothing & is watched by millions on big brother! Or even the local loon who has a bit of road rage.
15 minutes of fame is what some people want.
