Bruce was being spoken of as a potential england manager at one point. Some, not many, thought he'd be worth a shot at replacing Ferguson at united. Now he's in the championship. McCarthy will never be a premier league manager again. Nor will Di Canio. I doubt Poyet will get a PL job. Roy Keane is an assistant now. The job kills careers.
D not sure I fully agree but you may be right - I honestly think it reflects the trauma of football management - not many managers are successful - short life span at a club - but that's only my view - many other issues in play
I can't recall all that hype about Bruce but I'll take your word for it, but the fact is he's more than capable of putting his career into a nose dive all by himself without Sunderland's help. Some who have been here can argue about lack of resources - not him, he was shopping in Harrods. Just a poor manager.
To be honest we have not employed a manager yet that has excited me. The only one I was keen on was Keane (see what I did there). I remember being very underwhelmed when we got Bruce, I thought MON would cost us a fortune and he did, I love PDC but knew that was destine for failure. Gus was a nice bloke but had no premier league experience. Dick was too old and did not want to commit to the long term? Who do I want now??? Difficult one. I think Big Sam would probably be well liked. The thing about Sunderland fans is we like a tackle, back in the Reid days players like Ball, McCann and Swartz got stuck in and the crowd loved it. We played with quick winger and full backs who got the ball in the box, Quinny and SKP did the rest. That is exactly how Big Sam plays so I expect after a few games the fans would love it. Pearson is similar to the above too and I am warming to the idea of him, Leicester's success is down to him in reality. The above 2 would probably keep us up BUT if we want to actually get somewhere we should be trying to break the bank for a manager like De Boer. Someone who can attract skillful footballers and play the game the modern way. Thing is Gus tried to do that and it did not work for us. So for me the jury is out, I just hope whoever we get gives it a good go, I personally think we have good players, we need another CB but apart from that the talent is there, it just needs decent direction.
It's not just our club that kills the careers of English managers. I think there are only 7-8 of them in the PL. You know things are bad for them when you hear of Pardew as being touted as the next England manager
Or they were never up to it in the first place? Because a good manager with character, grit, determination, footballing skill, footballing knowledge, man management skills and a thick skin can and will do well at SAFC and would see it through, we just haven't found that person yet. Tough characters have shone for clubs in the past, Ferguson was such a man, Bob Paisley another. All it needs is our board to do its job.............and that is where the problem lies, they just do not get it! The passion of football in the NE has been massively let down, the fantastic fans have been MASSIVLY let down, by people who are basically inept. They have been clutching at straws for years with their appointments and are utterly useless at their jobs. Because otherwise we would not be in the situation we find ourselves in, they have taken gold and turned it into **** and it makes the fans, certainly mine, blood boil. The board do not deserve it, but the fans KTF. Yep I've had a drink & yes I'm feked off
Just a pedantic observation, Ferguson struggled at ManU until a shed load of money fell into his lap and Paisley inherited a team and club structure that was built to last until Dalglish got hold of it.
Ferguson worked towards a brilliant era of football for MU and brought the youngsters through. Paisley was at Liverpool in several guises during his career, IMO he was a bloody brilliant bloke and a brilliant manager and he was born in Durham. I don't think there is any doubt that they knew their trade and they had character, which is what we need
It wasn't widespread and he was never a front runner but he was always mentioned. The England job was likely down to a lack of anyone English and decent and United was likely just his connection as a player. I agree he's by no means a good manager but coming to us meant he was found out as a ****ty manager and it effectively killed his career.
Walter Mazzari has turned us down according to some - when, in reality, we haven't approached him and he's just said he's basically too scared to take on something that was difficult and wants an easy job (that's how I read it anyhow!): Former Inter Milan coach Walter Mazzarri is not interested in replacing Dick Advocaat at Sunderland, but Stabaek boss Bob Bradley might be please log in to view this image Former Inter Milan coach Walter Mazzarri Walter Mazzarri is the latest potential candidate to rule himself out of contention to become the next head coach of Sunderland. But former US national team boss Bob Bradley has become the first to publicly declare an interest in a job to which he would “give everything that I’ve got”. While Black Cats legend Niall Quinn has urged his former employer to appoint a “manager” capable of revolutionising the Wearside club. Sunderland are searching for their fifth fully-fledged manager or head coach in three years, after a dismal start to the season – winless in the Premier League, they are second bottom – resulted in Dick Advocaat’s resignation on Sunday. Harry Redknapp and David Moyes have already placed themselves out of the running, with Sean Dyche also thought to be disinclined to switch to the Stadium of Light. And sources in Italy now claim Mazzarri is similarly disinterested. The 54-year-old has been seeking work since his dismissal by Inter Milan last November, is currently learning English and has been in the country in recent weeks. He was linked with the Sunderland role even before it became vacant. But Chroniclelive understands Mazzarri is unwilling to risk his reputation by taking on the challenge of saving the club from relegation, and looks set to reassess his options in his homeland. Bradley, however, has expressed his interest in the position. please log in to view this image The Stadium of Light, Sunderland The 57-year-old’s contract at Norwegian side Stabaek allows him to talk with any potential suitor. And he said: “In a club like Sunderland, there might be a possibility, but there are a lot of managers who want a job like that. “I’m realistic, and realise that the list of candidates is long. “At the same time, I’m confident. I believe in myself as a coach. I know that I can enter any scenario, and give everything that I’ve got.” Though replaced as favourite by Nigel Pearson with some bookmakers, Sam Allardyce’s odds remain shortest with most. Reports emanating from London, however, suggest any move for the former Newcastle United boss seems likely to stall given his demands of a sizeable transfer fund going into the January transfer window – and a substantial bonus in the event of leading the club to safety. Free agent Kevin Nolan, it has been said, would be his first signing. Either and any way, whosoever does become Advocaat’s successor, Quinn says the “same old, same old” cannot be countenanced, with revolution required. The former Sunderland player, manager and chairman said: “If it’s Bradley from America, who hasn’t been in the Premier League before, he might do things totally different, that would get Sunderland going. “Big Sam might be radical in as much that he’ll totally change the way things are going there. “I think the same old, same old isn’t going to work and I think you need a manager to really change and revolutionise everything there.” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As for that bold bit - was it the Mirror who said that?
Said on another thread that if SA is given the job, he will have been absolutely clear in his demands of Short and try to make it difficult for Short to renege on those. If that includes transfer money then great. So found a positive there. If Bradley gets the job, it's an unknown but I like the sound of him, he could help create the revolution that Niall Quinn is looking for. I'd be positive about that. Pearson? Hmm - will give youth a chance? I'm sure I'll scratch up some more positives if he is appointed. Whoever is appointed it will be very interesting to see how they handle the long serving players.
God I hope not! Arrogant prick Pearson who got fired for something to do with supporting his son being racist or homophobic didn;t he? He's OK at building something over time but we need immediate results really - we can;t afford to be taking 1 or 2 seasons for a gaffer to make his mark - it needs to be now - I reckon the club haven;t approached anyone yet or are in discussions with candidates. Just because SA isn;t here yet doesn;t mean he doesn't want it - it may be that Short is taking his time whilst we have a little bit of time. Remember, the last boss to "quit" was Roy Keane - the remaining ones have all been forced out - in other words Short made the decision to get rid of the others so could have the wheels in motion - as DA has left then Short won;t have had as much time to put those wheels in motion.
If you asked most blokes on here a year ago if they wanted Sam, most would tell you to **** off mate.. It's only of late on here that I've noticed a few wanting him as manager., how times have changed lol. Pearson is a nutter, but a nutter that got Leicester through a tough period last season and can build a team and promote youth. Big Sam can't evolve. Pearson for me.
We had Advocaat at the time though mate - if we were up against it those sxame people would say the same. Pearson got Leicester INTO the position before he got them out of it! He won;t have the time to do both for us. Youth is only worthwhile if it's good enough - we currently only really have Watmore as Beadling is injured and our attaking prowess isn;t really an issue - it's the defensive side of things that needs work
y Our U21 temperature one the best - even without Beading - the young defenders can't be too bad - need to be given a chance - personally was'nt sure DA was good at giving youth a chance aka Watmore - normally he used ready made players in his past successfull career I believe
