Arsenal are certainly a big club both historically and in the modern world of football, they have fallen short a lot in recent times but still have the fanbase and financial infrastructure required for them to be considered a big club.

So ... if Arsenal are a "real big" club, then Carragher is as I stated an utter tool. For is it not the case that for at least 3 of the past 10 PL seasons, their coveted CL slot has nearly been lost to Spurs, going down to the last game of the PL season ?? Is it not the case that in at least two of those seasons, they had to raise the game in the final third of the season to a level of form typical of league champions ?? That is the evidence that a "real big" club in fact gets VERY worried about what a club like Spurs does, on-pitch at the very minimum. Carragher, like all Mousers, has to learn to live with the fact that for all their extra revenue, and "history" , Spurs are a better run outfit. More PL placing bang for their buck. A chairman who wields the transfer/wage cost axe with a titanium fist. And a squad that even when the club has manager comedy hour, still finishes in the top 6. Spurs, dey do all the above don't dey doh.
And so out it comes after weaseling about for 3 posts. Spurs are doing so well, and the club is in a fantastic state getting into the Champions League and winning Trophies. But hold on that's not the case is it? You can disagree with Carr and myself but it does not eleavate you to anything more than wha's in your head, at this moment Spurs are also rans as are Liverpool I'm unhappy with that but can admit it.
Unfortunately, the relatively recent arrival of multi billionaire owners has turned all but the super rich into also rans. Fact is it ain't a level playing field anymore. The financial playing field is most definitely sloped towards the few.
I agree, it's going to be difficult to consistantly get into the top 4. As a fan I want in there to see my club play in the Champions League and am not so interested in the financial implications, that's for the club to deal with. Spurs and ourselves are trying to make that leap and it's no easy task.

The fact is that "real big" clubs do have to worry about what Spurs are doing (one of those clubs more often than the others) . And you don't have to be a "real big" club to cause such worry. Nor richer. Just better run, on and off-pitch, at the key moments.

In any period, the club that is the Empire has the financial clout and material success to attract players with varying combinations of financial/silverware aspiration. But even loads more money than your would-be usurpers does not protect you from the right combination of on/off pitch incompetence (as the last 5-6 PL seasons have proved) .
I'd disagree. The top clubs when I was young - of which we were one - are no longer the the top clubs. In today's game, yes a big club can have an off season. Utd had a real shocker, Chavs are having one this. But, they'll buy their way out of it, just as Utd did. Unless something changes dramatically, today's top clubs will still be tomorrow's.
